Life comes at you fast in the NFL as one former member of the Seattle Seahawks can attest. Two days after signing with the Seahawks, the franchise opted to move on from one defender.
The Seahawks announced the signing of Thor Griffith on July 29, 2025 and two days later the franchise released the defensive tackle to make room for the addition of cornerback Keydrain Calligan.
Here is what you need to know about the latest Seahawks roster moves.
The Seahawks Released Thor Griffith 2 Days After Signing the Defender
It is unclear exactly why the Seahawks quickly pivoted from Griffith to Calligan. Seattle may have deemed the secondary a bigger need than the defensive line early in training camp.
The 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive tackle played college football at Harvard and Louisville before going undrafted in the 2024 NFL draft.
Heading into the draft, Griffith was described as a “powerhouse interior defensive lineman.”
“A powerhouse interior defensive lineman, Griffith’s low-cut frame and powerful base allow for good balance through contact,” NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein detailed in Griffith’s pre-draft profile. “He has the ability to get under the blocker’s pads and reestablish the line of scrimmage when he gets into the blocker first.
“He lacks the mass of a run-plugging nose tackle and he’s a linear mover with below average short-area change of direction. He’s more of a pocket pusher than an edge finder as a pass rusher but his ability to create disruptive snaps will be appealing to even-front teams looking for competition inside.”
Can Keydrain Calligan Create a Role With the Seahawks?
The signing initially drew attention given Griffith’s massive size. It will be interesting to see if Calligan will be able to compete for a roster spot longer than the defensive tackle was in the Pacific Northwest.
“Ah! This is intriguing,” Seahawks Nerd explained on X after Griffith’s initial signing. “Thor Griffith was one of only 11 DTs to have >10% career run stop and pass rush win rates since the 2018 draft.
“Among guys like Quinnen Williams and Jalen Carter. Not to mention he weighed in at 320 lbs and completed 42 bench reps at his pro day.”
Seahawks CB Keydrain Calligan Ran a 4.42-Second 40 Time Ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft
Calligan previously signed with the Houston Texans after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL draft. Now, Calligan will look to create a role in a talented Seahawks secondary.
“Southeast Louisiana all-conference safety-corner Keydrain Calligan (6-0, 200, 4.42 speed, 20 bench reps), met or Zoom with 15 #NFLDraft teams, got high marks from scouts for explosiveness, cover skills, positional versatility,” KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson detailed in an April 26, message on X.
Seahawks GM John Schneider Signed a Contract Extension Through 2031
One person not going anywhere any time soon is Seahawks general manager John Schneider. Seattle announced the team signed Schneider to a contract extension through 2031.
“When Pete and I got together, we made a conscious effort—we had both been fired before—so it was like, hey, neither one of us who cares who’s going to get the credit, but we want to go win championships together and create an atmosphere that players want to play here and coaches want to coach here, and that everybody was just extremely fired up to come to work every day,” Schneider said following the contract extension news in a statement via Seahawks.com.
