The Seattle Seahawks were in complete control during the first half of Thursday’s Week 4 matchup with the division rival Arizona Cardinals, and then things changed in the second half.
Kyler Murray and company turned it on in the second half after scoring only three points in the first half while getting booed by their fans at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Murray connected with running back Emari Demercado on a seven-yard touchdown pass to tie the game, with 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, 28 seconds was too much time, with the Seahawks getting kicker Jason Myers to boot a 52-yard field goal for the win. Seattle improved to 3-1 on the season as a result of Myers’ game-winning field goal, with Arizona falling to 2-2.
Star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn’t make a trip to the end zone during Thursday’s win over the Cardinals, but he finished with a game-high 79 receiving yards on four catches. He also caught a crucial pass from quarterback Sam Darnold down the stretch to help set up Myers.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba Vows to Have Better Discipline
Although Smith-Njigba played well during Thursday’s win, he knows Seattle can improve in several areas. He spoke to the media and was asked about the controversial holding call on him that nullified a touchdown from running back Zach Charbonnet.
“Players make bad plays, refs make bad plays, but it happens,” Smith-Njigba said. “Sucks for Charbonnet. I wanted him to get that touchdown. I just have to be better.”
Fortunately for Smith-Njigba and Charbonnet, the Seahawks were still able to secure the win and improve their record to 3-1, which puts them right on the heels of the San Francisco 49ers (3-0) in the NFC West division standings.
The 49ers will host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, with hopes of staying undefeated.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s Hot-Mic Moment With Ref Goes Viral
Smith-Njigba was calm, cool and collected during his postgame press conference, as he talked about the thrilling victory against the Cardinals, which came down to a game-winning field goal.
However, the same can’t be said for the Seahawks star when he was on the field and was called for holding. Smith-Njigba’s loud reaction to the flag that negated Charbonnet’s touchdown was caught on the referee’s microphone when the penalty was announced, sparking a reaction from the ref and social media going wild, via Awful Announcing’s X account.
Obviously, the ref didn’t take kindly to Smith-Njigba reacting the way he did, and the Seahawks star’s not-safe-for-work comment echoed in the arena and was heard on the broadcast, with Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit sharing their reactions.
With the way the ref looked at Smith-Njigba after the NSFW reaction was heard, it’s a little surprising another flag wasn’t thrown, as he was clearly upset and disgusted by it.
Regardless of the viral moment caught on the ref’s microphone and on camera for everyone watching on Amazon to hear, the Seahawks came away with the win, making Seattle a team that could be a force to be reckoned with in the NFC this season.
