Seahawks Land Former Starting Playmaker Days Before Cardinals Game on TNF

The Seattle Seahawks are making a late move for a running back just days before the team’s Thursday Night Football clash against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. Seattle is signing former Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert. The Seahawks hosted three running backs for a workout, and it appears the team was most impressed by Herbert.

“The Seahawks are expected to sign veteran RB Khalil Herbert to the practice squad, source says,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo detailed in a September 22, 2025, message on X. “Herbert, who was with the Colts in camp, was one of three running backs to work out for Seattle today.”

According to Emerald Spectrum’s Corbin Smith, the Seahawks also hosted veterans Brandon Bolden and Myles Gaskin for a workout before agreeing to terms with Herbert.

Here’s what you need to know about the Seahawks’ latest roster move.

The Seahawks Added RB Khalil Herbert Ahead of Cardinals Game

The news comes as the Seahawks released rookie running back Damien Martinez days before the team’s Week 3 win over the New Orleans Saints. Seattle running back Zach Charbonnet has also been sidelined with an injury.

Herbert’s best statistical season came with the Bears in 2022 when the running back posted 129 carries for 731 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

The playmaker started nine games for Chicago in 2023. Prior to joining the Seahawks, Herbert has appeared in 56 games during his time with the Bears and Cincinnati Bengals, including 13 starts.

The Seahawks May Be Expecting RB Zach Charbonnet to Miss More Time

Seattle has not provided much in the way of updates on running back Zach Charbonnet. The playmaker was sidelined for the team’s Week 3 contest against the Saints as Charbonnet continues to deal with a foot injury.

This move seems to indicate the Seahawks are concerned that Charbonnet could miss additional time.

“Macdonald said Devon Witherpsoon was the only one of the ‘doubtful’ players to test out Sunday seeing if they could play. Had become apparent Julian Love, Nick Emmanwori and Zach Charbonnet wouldn’t be playing,” Fox 13 Seattle’s Curtis Crabtree noted on September 22.

“Says he wouldn’t say that means Witherspoon is closer, however.”

Seattle Is a 1.5-Point Underdog vs. Arizona in Week 4

The Seahawks are preparing for a major NFC West clash against the Cardinals. It is early but the division appears to be loaded with all four teams having a winning record.

Seattle is a 1.5-point road underdog versus Arizona in Week 4, per FanDuel. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald wants to see the team display more consistency in the rushing attack.

“Yeah, it’s not good enough,” Macdonald told Seattle Sports’ “Brock and Salk” during a September 22, interview. “It’s not even close to being good enough. It’s not what we saw throughout camp. It’s not what we saw in the preseason.

“You’ve gotta give the other teams credit too. They’re designing some good things and playing hard and tackling well. But we’ve gotta be better. We need to be better.”

After battling injuries throughout training camp, Walker appears to be one of the only healthy Seahawks running backs.
