The Seattle Seahawks have made some big changes to their offense, getting rid of their starting quarterback and two veteran receivers in the offseason.
Their starting running back could be next, one insider suggests.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox identified trade candidates for all 32 NFL teams, suggesting the Seahawks could consider parting ways with 24-year-old running back Kenneth Walker III. Knox wrote that Walker’s injury history and tenuous spot on the depth chart could lead the Seahawks to cut ties with him as he enters the final season of his rookie contract.
Seahawks Could Revamp Backfield
Knox noted that the Seahawks have already revamped two positions on offense and could turn their attention to the backfield next, getting a return from Walker before he potentially leaves in free agency.
“The Seahawks have undergone a bit of a mini-rebuild this offseason,” Knox wrote. “While head coach Mike Macdonald is back for his second seasonâand general manager John Schneider may never go anywhereâquarterback Geno Smith, wide receiver Tyler Lockett and wideout DK Metcalf were all replaced.
“The Seahawks should consider putting Kenneth Walker III on the trade block too. While the 24-year-old has been a serviceable starter for Seattle, he missed time with an ankle injury last season and is entering a contract year.”
Knox noted that the Seahawks have been reluctant to give Walker a contract extension, with no negotiations going on with the running back or his agent.
“If Seattle is willing to let Walker go next year, it should see what it can get for him now,” Knox wrote. “The Michigan State product has topped 1,100 scrimmage yards twice and would undoubtedly draw interest. The Seahawks, meanwhile, could turn to Zach Charbonnet while getting a closer look at rookie Damien Martinez.”
After topping 1,000 yards in his rookie season, Walker has seen his output decrease in each of the next two seasons in Seattle as he dealt with injuries. Walker rushed for 2,528 yards with 24 touchdowns since coming into the league in 2022.
Seahawks Could Turn Keys Over to Zach Charbonnet
The Seahawks have the luxury of a steady and capable backup running back in Zach Charbonnet. Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay called him the third-best backup in the NFL, noting that his health and durability stands in sharp contrast to Walker.
“Given Charbonnet has been available for 33 of a possible 34 contests since entering the league and has regularly answered the call when elevated into the starting lineup, it wouldn’t be a major surprise if the Seahawks choose to move on from Walker at the trade deadline,” Kay wrote.
Kay also came to the conclusion that Walker could be headed to the trade block, with the Seahawks potentially paving the way for Charbonnet to move into the No. 1 spot.
“Walker is a candidate to be dealt due to his declining play and expiring contract. The move would also clear the path for Charbonnet to take over as the starter a bit earlier than expected, providing Seattle with a preview of what could be their backfield in 2026 and potentially beyond,” Kay wrote.
