The Seattle Seahawks are trying to reunite with a familiar face in the secondary.
According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, the team is working to sign former Pro Bowl safety Quandre Diggs to its practice squad, though nothing is finalized yet.
Henderson reported on X that the Seahawks are in the process of bringing Diggs back into the building on a practice-squad deal. NFL insider Adam Schefter amplified the update by reposting Henderson’s report, giving the rumor national attention. Diggs himself further fanned the flame, tweeting a picture of his daughter with the Seahawks mascot Blitz.
A practice-squad agreement would not immediately place Diggs on the 53-man roster, but it would give Seattle an easy path to elevate him on game days if needed. It would also allow the Seahawks to get the veteran back into their system and evaluate how quickly he can help.
Seahawks Working to Sign Quandre Diggs After Injuries to Julian Love, Ty Okada
Henderson added that the potential reunion comes as the Seahawks deal with multiple injuries at safety. Julian Love is already on injured reserve, and head coach Mike Macdonald has said it is unclear whether Love will be activated this week.
Seattle also lost Ty Okada in its most recent game. The safety exited in the second half with an oblique injury and did not return. Henderson reported there is optimism that Okada can avoid an IR stint, but he may still have to miss some time.
With two safeties banged up and roster spots at a premium, the practice squad offers the Seahawks a flexible way to add experience without immediately cutting elsewhere. Diggs, who knows the scheme and much of the locker room, fits that bill as well as anyone.
What Quandre Diggs Would Bring Back to the Seahawks
Diggs spent four and a half seasons in Seattle after arriving in a 2019 trade from the Detroit Lions. He became one of the faces of the Seahawks’ defense, earning three straight Pro Bowl nods from 2020 through 2022 and emerging as a leader on and off the field.
During that stretch, Diggs developed a reputation as a ball-hawking free safety with a knack for late-game turnovers. His range in the deep middle and his chemistry with fellow safety Jamal Adams helped stabilize the back end of the defense during a transition period for the franchise.
Seattle released Diggs last year in a cap-related move, ending his first stint with the team. A return on a practice-squad deal would come at a much lower price tag while still giving the Seahawks another experienced option as they navigate their current injury issues.
If the move goes through, Diggs would likely start as depth behind the current starters, with the possibility of a quick promotion if he shows he’s in game shape and the injuries linger. His familiarity with the city, organization and many of his former teammates could shorten any ramp-up time.
What It Means for the Seahawks’ Secondary Going Forward
Even if Love returns soon and Okada’s injury proves minor, the Seahawks have seen how quickly depth can disappear in the secondary. Adding Diggs would give them another trusted veteran as they push through the heart of the season.
At minimum, a Diggs reunion would add leadership to a young defensive back room that includes emerging pieces at corner and safety. At maximum, it could lead to the 31-year-old stepping right back into a key role if the injuries persist.
For now, the move remains in the “working to sign” stage. But if the Seahawks finalize a deal, Seattle fans could soon see a familiar No. 6 patrolling the back end of the defense again.
