Sean McVay Had Firm Response If Rams Would Use Tush Push

The Philadelphia Eagles have become quite synonymous with the tush push over the last few seasons. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has 33 rushing touchdowns that have come from the one-yard mark throughout his career.

Since the Eagles began using the tush push, other teams in the league have started to incorporate the play into their offensive schemes.

A reporter asked Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay if he had had any conversation with quarterback Matthew Stafford about using the tush push in the 2025 season.

“No,” McVay affirmed. “He’s done it for so long, we always joke about it, [Stafford] is a terrible sneaker — he ended up having some good sneaks last year… The Eagles run it and there’s a technique, there’s a commitment to it and it’s really remarkable, but there’s a reason why they’ve done it different than others.”

“To answer your question, you won’t be seeing much tush push from the LA Rams. So we don’t have to worry about defending that one for us.”

Stafford has recorded only 1 rushing touchdown under McVay back in the 2022-23 season. Stafford has recorded 15 rushing touchdowns in his career, with his best rushing TD season coming with the Detroit Lions in the 2012-13 season, with 4 rushing TDs.

With the quarterback extended for another few years with the organization, he could reach 20 rushing TDs by the end of his career.

Running Backs Doing The Bulk Of Work

Kyren Williams

Like the name of the position, the running backs for the LA Rams will get most of the rushing touchdowns in the season.

Kyren Williams, who signed a three-year extension with the Rams, led the team in rushing touchdowns last season with 14. Williams ran for 12 rushing TDs in the 23-24 season.

The only other player to have a rushing touchdown for the Rams last season is wide receiver Puka Nacua.

The Rams won’t need to use the tush push as they already have a strong run game. Williams was top 10 in rushing yards and touchdowns for the Rams last season.

Williams said that he wants to make the 2025-26 season his best yet and could strive for more than 14 rushing touchdowns.

The Rams drafted running back Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Auburn, who has had some good showings in the preseason. If Hunter gets some quality snaps as a rookie, he could be a good backup for the Rams.

Stafford Could Be More Mobile

While Matthew Stafford is not known for his running ability, he was able to rush for 10 first touchdowns for the Rams last season.

To throw some curveballs at opposing defenses, McVay may call QB sneaks or other sorts of plays where Stafford will use his feet more often.

The highest amount of first downs Stafford had in his career was 16, showing that he can be a threat when rushing downfield.

Stafford, 37, is currently dealing with a back issue that could prevent him from being mobile. The QB has said that he is healthy and ready to go for the Rams in the season opener on Sunday.
