Seattle Seahawks Ranked 6th Best NFL Team, According to Polarizing Broadcaster

Colin Cowherd has fired off plenty of hot takes in his broadcasting career. Sometimes he hits. Sometimes, perhaps more often, he misses. Despite Cowherd’s bountiful history of incorrect predictions, Seattle Seahawks fans will hope his latest proclamation proves true.

On Aug. 20, Cowherd revealed a power ranking of his top ten NFL teams in a segment on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. The top five spots were mostly chalk:

The next team on his list was more eye-catching: the Seattle Seahawks, landing at No. 6 overall. While there’s certainly optimism surrounding this young Seahawks squad, it’s a lofty prediction for a team that missed the playoffs last season–albeit narrowly.

Here is Cowherd’s explanation of why the Seahawks are the sixth-best team heading into the 2025 NFL season:

“Back to back to back drafts that I like. They are going to rely on that run game. They upgraded their offensive line. Their defense will be in the second year under Mike MacDonald. The early schedule is pretty easy for Sam Darnold, who I do believe is a better version of Geno Smith. He’s a better athlete. [He] can be a bit reckless, but he’s a West Coast kid. I think he’s comfortable. I think they upgraded [the] offensive coordinator. So, I just think this team, if Jaxon Smith-Njigba can become a number one wide receiver…I like their backs, I like their O-line, I like their secondary. There’s not a lot about Seattle I don’t like.”

Cowherd also alluded to mounting concerns around the Los Angeles Rams, winners of the NFC West last season, due to quarterback Matthew Stafford’s lingering back issues.

“And if Stafford, by the way, did not play much this year, I already have [Seattle] winning the division,” Cowherd added. That said, he’s still high on the Rams, ranking them eighth on his list.

What the Betting Odds Say About the Seattle Seahawks

Cowherd’s power rankings might be subject to some hometown cooking, considering the longtime media host grew up in Grayland, Washington, and attended Eastern Washington University. The general consensus is that Seattle will be a competitive, high-floor team in 2025. However, most analysts, as well as the Vegas oddsmakers, are less bullish on the Seahawks.

Current betting odds give the Seahawks the 20th-best chance of winning the Super Bowl (+6000). They also have the worst odds to win the NFC West (+550), meaning Vegas predicts them to finish last in the division. The odds favor Seattle missing the playoffs (-220).

Reasons for Cowherd’s Optimism

Fortunately, the outcomes are decided between hash marks instead of slot machines. Cowherd’s Emerald City optimism could look Nostradamus-like in four months.

After all, the Seahawks made several key acquisitions in the offseason. They not only made Darnold a $100 million man, but they also brought in two former All-Pros in Cooper Kupp and DeMarcus Lawrence. Some fans, though not all, would argue that trading DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh is addition by subtraction.

Several rookies have shown promising flashes in the preseason, too. Wide receiver Tory Horton had three receptions and a touchdown in his first preseason game against the Raiders. The following week, left guard Grey Zabel showcased some impressive blocks against the Chiefs.

One of Zabel’s blocks even went viral after an erroneous tweet said it was on All-Pro DT Chris Jones. Jones, of course, has not played in the preseason. Like most players of his caliber, he saves his snaps for the regular season. However, that didn’t stop one prominent broadcaster from falling for the tweet.

“This Grey Zabel, this offensive lineman they’ve got. Oh my God, he’s moving Chris Jones around like he’s a loaf of bread,” said Colin Cowherd upon seeing the tweet. Seahawks fans will hope that’s the only mistake he makes regarding the team this season.
