Secret Caleb Williams Issue May Be Surfacing for the Bears

The rookie year for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has wrapped up, and while Williams showed promise during that first year, there are much bigger expectations for him and the team this season. The Bears, of course, are hoping for a huge year for Williams during the 2025-26 season, one that will be under the guidance of offensive mastermind Ben Johnson.

Johnson did wonders with the Detroit Lions‘ offense, including quarterback Jared Goff, and there’s no reason he can’t do it again. Williams has so much natural talent, and that’s a good fit with Johnson.

But, during an interview on Thursday, July 24, the Chicago Tribune’s Dan Wiederer spoke with 670 The Score, and Wiederer revealed some issues that may be going on with Williams and his new coaching staff. Notably, he mentioned the “maturity” of Williams. Does that mean Williams is partying after practice or something? Here’s what Wiederer had to say.

Dan Wiederer on Chicago Bears’ Caleb Williams

“I would say there is a push to make sure on a daily basis that he understands the commitment level that is required to reach the heights that both he and the team are trying to get to,” Wiederer said during the interview.

He added, “I think that’s a maturity process for a young quarterback, and it’s one that they are pushing Caleb to understand as quickly as possible, that you better understand when you go home from this building at night, that your first responsibility is preparing for the next day and understanding what’s coming from you the next day and being ready for what’s coming the next day and being in your playbook and getting all those little things down.”

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if there are some growing pains between Williams and Johnson. Williams has a totally new coaching staff, and the expectations are high for both Johnson and his star quarterback. But, these two could work magic together, so let’s hope Williams and Johnson are having a productive time together, no matter what the insiders are saying.

Where Caleb Williams Falls on QB Rosters

In CBS Sports’ June 2025 tally of the best quarterbacks in the league going into the new season, Cody Benjamin names Williams a “promising prospect.”

“The No. 1 pick of a deep 2024 quarterback class, Williams was colorful, if erratic, in a debut under shaky coaching,” Benjamin notes. “His supercharged arm and freestyling skills stand to benefit from Ben Johnson’s takeover on the sidelines, plus a newly fortified front featuring All-Pro Joe Thuney. Can he contain himself when he must?”

PFF’s look at the best quarterbacks in the league has Williams at No. 24. In the piece, John Kosko talks about the expectations for Williams after last season.

“Touted as a generational talent by many, Williams underwhelmed as a rookie, earning just a 67.6 overall grade and posting only five single-game grades above 70.0,” he says. “The talent is undeniable, but his NFL success will hinge on learning to find open targets and avoiding the habit of running himself into pressure.”

So, will this be Williams’ year? Time will tell, but under Johnson’s guidance, it could certainly happen.
