Training camp is set to begin for the New England Patriots just three days from now, on Wednesday, July 23rd. Rookies arrived in Foxboro yesterday, while the veterans will be rolling in Tuesday.
The team announced the full physically unable to perform list, or PUP, yesterday and it is headlined by a few key starters.
Because of the early designation, any of the seven players who received the designation will be unable to take the field, but may participate in all other training camp activities; such as meetings and strength training. They may return to the team at any point before the 90-man roster becomes a finalized 53-man crew in late August.
Carlton Davis and Mack Hollins Among Injured
ESPN’s Mike Reiss released the full list in a tweet last night.
“WR Mack Hollins, TE Austin Hooper, OT Vederian Lowe and LB Jahlani Tavai are opening camp on active/PUP list,” Reiss’s post read. “CB Carlton Davis III, S Josh Minkins and WR Jeremiah Webb are on active/non-football list.”
This is un-encouraging news for many reasons. My biggest concern lies with the health of Mack Hollins.
Hollins was brought in on a two year contract in March. At 31-years-old the pass catcher was supposed to be a veteran security blanket in a still relatively weak receiving room. No injury distinction has been made so it is unclear how long the Patriots presumptive wide receiver three will miss, per CBS.
Then there is Carlton Davis. Davis is on the NFI list for yet another undisclosed reason. If the veteran stays on the NFI list when the season starts, he will be forced to miss a minimum of four games to start the season.
“Davis won’t be able to practice or participate in preseason games while on the NFI list, but he can be activated whenever he’s medically cleared,” CBS reports. “The veteran cornerback signed with New England in March and is expected to be one of the team’s starting cornerbacks in his first year with the club.”
Vederian Lowe and Jahlani Tavai are two returning Patriots whose position on the depth chart has been threatened by newcomers. For Lowe, it is incoming rookie Will Campbell and new vet Morgan Moses who have spaced him out. For Tavai, it is recent signing Robert Spillane and a handful of young off ball linebackers who are looking to chisel out a role. Starting the season on the sideline is not going to help out either of their cases.
More On The Two Undrafted Rookies
Jeremiah Webb and Josh Minkins rounded out the Patriots NFI crew. Both players were undrafted memebers of the 2025 rookie class who signed on in May.
Minkins is just 22-years-old and played 49 games in college for the University of Louisville and the University of Cincinnati.
Webb had a longer road to the show. He began his career at FCS South Dakota. Last season he transferred to the Sunbelt, playing 13 games for the University of South Alabama. In those 13 games the receiver brought in 36 passes for 649 yards and five touchdowns.
