Shaun Wright-Phillips has sent advice to his former club Chelsea and has named the one player they must sign in the January transfer window.

The Blues are flying this season under head coach Enzo Maresca with Chelsea currently sat second in the Premier League table after 16 games.

Some pundits have claimed Chelsea cannot be considered genuine title challengers until they sign a new goalkeeper to replace Robert Sanchez.

Others have stated that the west Londoners must bring in a new striker, with the club linked to Nigeria international Victor Osimhen.

Wright-Phillips, though, has instead urged his old club to prioritise a move for a centre-back as the January transfer window looms.

‘I think Victor Osimhen would be a top player in the Premier League, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that the striker position is where Chelsea should be prioritising in the next few transfer windows,’ Wright-Phillips told sportscasting.com.

‘They let Thiago Silva go, but they didn’t replace him. I think they need more experience in the defence rather than in the striker position right now.

‘They’re not struggling to score goals. That’s not a problem for them right now.

‘The problem is they’re conceding goals. If they can cut some of those mistakes then again, we see a different Chelsea.’

Chelsea head coach Maresca has continued to insist that his side are not in a Premier League title race this season because of the team’s defence.

Speaking after the 2-1 win over Brentford this month, the Italian said: ‘No matter how many games we are going to win, I think we’re not ready to compete for the title.

‘One of the reasons is I think the team that knows how to compete to win titles will not concede a goal (Bryan Mbeumo’s late consolation) like we concede.

‘On 90 minutes, a throw-in for us and we concede a goal. A team that knows how to win titles, that goal they’re not to going to concede.’
