Shedeur Sanders Beats Out Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes in Stunner

It’s a given that Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is one of the most popular and successful quarterbacks of his generation and, really, of all time. He’s won multiple championships for the Chiefs and continues to thrive, which is why the Kansas City Chiefs have him signed him to stay with the team through 2031.

Since Mahomes is so popular, it goes without saying that he has some of the hottest-selling merchandise available. But, just how fast is Mahomes’ gear flying off store shelves?

The NFLPA has released its year-end Top 50 player sales list, which reports on sales from March 1 through July 31, 2025. So, this really captures that time between seasons, when it’s likely that whichever team won the championship will have the hottest gear available. So, how well did Mahomes’ merch sell during this period?

Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes vs. Shedeur Sanders

The annual list from the NFLPA is the sole verified ranking of all officially licensed, NFL player-branded merchandise sold via online and traditional retail outlets, and it’s reported by more than 85 NFLPA licensees, including Fanatics, Outerstuff, Fathead, FOCO and Funko. It’s all official merch and totally licensed.

An example of some of the licensed items and product categories included trading cards, men’s, women’s, and youth game jerseys, T-shirts and hoodies, backpacks, wall decals, pennants, collectible figurines, matted and framed photos, bobbleheads, plush, drinkware and pet products. So, it’s a wide range of gear and items.

Mahomes was ranked No. 7 on the tally, which is very good. But, what’s interesting is that rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders actually ranked higher than him, at No. 5. He hasn’t even played a game yet.

Eagles All-Pro and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley ranked No. 1. According to Sportico, Barkley is the first running back to snag that No. 1 showing since former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot in 2017.

As for the rest of the tally, Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts was No. 2, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was No. 3, Bills quarterback Josh Allen was No. 4 and Eagles’ Cooper DeJean jumped up to No. 6.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes is Still on Top

Meanwhile, the NFL has released their roster of the best players in the league going into the 2025-26 season, and Mahomes made the top 10. Michael Baca of the NFL’s website has released his top 10 players in the league, and he puts Mahomes at No. 5.

“Mahomes posted career-low numbers in his seventh season as a starter, but the respect he garners from his peers maintains a top-10 ranking within the Top 100 — a streak that began in 2019 after his first year as Chiefs QB1,” Baca says in the piece.

But, he adds, “Mahomes’ knack for making the impossible throws also sets him apart, and although the numbers might have prevented Mahomes from making his seventh straight Pro Bowl, there’s arguably no other QB you’d want with the game on the line.”

Following the Chiefs’ surprising loss in Week 1, the team is back and ready to rock. Let’s hope they turn their 0-1 record around quickly.
