Week 14 could be do-or-die for Shedeur Sanders as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
Sanders is set to start his third-straight game on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. The rookie quarterback has struggled as the starter, as he hasn’t shown he can be the long-term answer for the Browns.
With that, Browns insider Ken Carman of 92.3 The Fan believes Sunday could be the final start for Sanders if he doesn’t improve.
“I think style points are gonna count to Browns fans on Sunday,” Carman said on Friday. “If Shedeur plays well and they win, people will be excited; if they lose, people will be upset. If he plays like he’s been playing the last two games and they win, I think we are going to have a conversation. Either way, we are going to have a conversation.
“It’s going to be like, can he be the guy? If he doesn’t play well and they lose, we are going to talk about Fernando Mendoza and Dante Moore. If he plays normally, because he’s been passable, style points are going to count to a lot of people. You want to see him open up the offense. Everyone wants to see him throw the ball and see what he can do. If he struggles and it looks bad, that’s probably it.”
Carman believes if Sanders struggles again on Sunday, it could very well be his final start for the Browns. But the rookie quarterback could also cement himself as the starter for the foreseeable future with a good performance on Sunday against the Titans.
Browns Could Open Offense for Sanders
Since taking over as the Browns’ starting quarterback, Sanders hasn’t shown much.
Instead, Cleveland’s offense has been very conservative, but that could change in Week 14. NFL insider Albert Breer of SI believes the Browns will open the playbook and let Sanders show what he’s made of.
“The Browns, on the other hand, will be criticized this week for not letting Shedeur Sanders loose on San Francisco from a play-calling standpoint,” Breer wrote. “The reality: The weather stunk, and the coaches called the game to protect the rookie quarterback. My guess is he’ll get a little more rope against the Titans next weekend.”
If Sanders is given the chance to throw the ball and still struggles, it could very well be the end of the line for him.
Sanders went 16-of-25 for 149 yards and a touchdown against the 49ers‘ defense, but was sacked three times.
Sanders Wants to Pull The Trigger More
With Cleveland putting an emphasis on running, Sanders knows that when he’s given the chance to throw the ball, he needs to be better.
Sanders said he has to trust himself and his receivers and pull the trigger.
“Like I say, go out there and just pull the trigger. Well, nah, that’s not a great term,” Sanders said on Wednesday. “But what I mean by that is, like, go out there and see it and just hit it, you know? See it and hit it. Trust my eyes understand everything that I’ve been studying. And, the game, I’ll say, is slowing down a little bit for me. Just trust what I see.”
Sanders has thrown for 405 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions in three games this season.
