Shedeur Sanders’ Place on Browns QB Depth Chart After Preseason Debut Turns Heads

The Cleveland Browns have quite a quarterback competition on their hands in training camp this year. With Deshaun Watson likely out for the season after re-rupturing his Achilles tendon back in January, that has left Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders competing for the starting job.

In the Browns’ first preseason game of the year, Sanders drew the start under center. Flacco appears to have the inside track for the starting gig come Week 1, and Pickett and Gabriel are both dealing with minor injuries, so that thrust Sanders into the action. The former Colorado Buffaloes product starred during his time on the field, but his placement on Cleveland’s latest quarterback depth chart quickly caught the attention of fans.

Shedeur Sanders Still at the Bottom of Browns’ Quarterback Depth Chart

Sanders’ time with the Browns has been the subject of much fanfare, largely because of his stunning fall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Initially, Sanders was expected to be a first-round pick, but he ended up falling all the way to the fifth round. Cleveland eventually decided to snag Sanders, but not after they took Gabriel in the third round.

Add in the fact that the Browns’ quarterback job is wide open for the taking, and it’s added quite a bit of intrigue for the team during training camp. Sanders’ strong performance only made things more interesting, as he carved up the Carolina Panthers in Cleveland’s 30-10 win, throwing for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also adding another 19 yards on the ground.

Even though he was selected in the fifth round of the draft, some folks believe that Sanders is the best quarterback on the Browns roster. And yet, even with his strong preseason outing in the books, that hasn’t changed where he finds himself on Cleveland’s depth chart, as he is still listed as the No. 4 option behind Flacco, Pickett, and Gabriel.

“Browns unofficial QB depth chart remains the same entering Week 2 of preseason: 1. Joe Flacco 2. Kenny Pickett 3. Dillon Gabriel 4. Shedeur Sanders,” Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team shared in a post on X.

Pretty much everything about the start of Sanders’ NFL career has been confusing. Despite his strong play on the field in college with Colorado, he was passed over by every team several times. And even then, the Browns haven’t exactly seemed fully committed to him, as they have a handful of other options at the position, with Sanders frequently being utilized as the last option.

And yet, when he’s been on the field, Sanders has shown off his potential. Sure, it’s only one preseason game, but Sanders delivered one of the better passing performances of the opening week of preseason across the entire league. The good news for Sanders is that there’s still time for him to move up the depth chart, and if he continues to string together some strong performances, Cleveland’s coaching staff will have no choice but to give him more snaps.
