Shedeur Sanders Reveals Advice From Giants’ Veteran Quarterback

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders is arguably one of the most high-profile fifth-round picks in a long time.

He started the year as the emergency third-string quarterback, but was elevated to the backup spot once Cleveland traded Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Then, fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11, paving the way for Sanders to start the rest of the way.

Without Flacco, Sanders hasn’t had much guidance from veteran quarterbacks in his first season in the pros, but he revealed this week that a New York Giants player gave him some guidance “a couple of weeks ago.”

Jameis Winston Shares Advice With Shedeur Sanders

According to Sanders, New York Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston connected with the Cleveland Browns’ rookie to share some advice.

“I talked to Jameis a couple weeks ago after he threw for some crazy yards, but he said the most important thing is the wins. Having that guidance and having that knowledge from a vet like him truly helped me understand it a little bit more,” Sanders told reporters.

“I always knew, of course, winning was the final goal. That’s what everybody in this league tries to do, so you just got to focus on that.”

Clearly, Winston has been busy this season mentoring two rookie quarterbacks and spot-starting for the Giants when needed.

All jokes aside, it’s awesome to see a veteran keep an eye out for a rookie quarterback, even if they’re not on the same team.

Winston spent 2024 in Cleveland, and while he never shared the sideline with Sanders, he still has his best interests in mind.

Sanders made sure to highlight that he also values his Browns veteran teammates, who have mentored him throughout his rookie season.

“We are both people. Jameis is not here right now, so I don’t think it’s respectful to speak on his behalf, and I’m in the locker room full of other great teammates and other quarterbacks that are here that have helped give me wisdom also,” continued Sanders.

“But that’s just a thing that triggered me to speak his name because that was a conversation we had at one point.”

Is Jameis Winston the Best Veteran Mentor in the NFL?

There’s arguably no better backup quarterback to have behind your rookie quarterback than Winston.

His high energy is infectious, and doesn’t waver even if he’s the emergency third-string quarterback or the starter.

Winston has done nothing but support New York Giants rookie Jaxson Dart in his own first professional season, and wants to see the kid succeed.

“I just want to help this team win. When a team gives me the opportunity and believes in me, they give me a job, I want to play for that team and do my best for that team,” Winston told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan earlier in the season.

“I don’t care what the record is, I don’t care what the circumstances, situation or facts is, I always say what I want for myself, I want for everyone. I’m a solutions-oriented guy, so I want to be a part of the solution. I don’t just want to run away when things get bad.”

With Winston under contract for 2026, it’s safe to say the Giants’ quarterback room is in safe hands with their backup.
