SShedeur Sanders isn’t spending time worrying about decisions regarding his future that are out of his control as the Cleveland Browns head into their final game of the season.
Sanders’ rookie year has been anything but conventional. Once projected as a potential early first-round pick, he slid to the fifth round, where Cleveland selected him at No. 144 overall.
He began the season buried on the depth chart before injuries and roster moves opened the door in Week 12. Sanders seized the opportunity, going 2-4 as a starter while throwing for 1,289 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
The Browns face a pivotal decision this offseason. Sanders has shown flashes of promise along with the expected growing pains, leaving open the question of whether Cleveland will pursue one of the top quarterbacks in the draft. For now, Sanders is focused solely on what he can control.
“I can’t think about what other people’s opinion or what they view me as,” Sanders said. “I know the teams that we go against. I know they definitely respect me in a passing game, for sure. But I can’t be accountable for somebody else’s decisions.”
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Searching for Consistency
Sanders has shown that he can make the big plays. What the former Colorado star is focused on is finding more consistency.
“Just staying consistent, taking what they give me. Whenever we get off rhythm, get back on rhythm, you know, get back on track,” Sander said. “And I think that’s the next part of my game I’m trying to evolve, is whenever either we’re stagnant or some adversity comes, being able to get back on track.”
Sanders has not been shy to criticize his play. After beating the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, he said the offense needed to be better. Sanders said the most significant strides he can make are in his decision-making.
“I think it’s really about the decisions I make,” Sanders said. “I have to be able to take the proper, necessary risks. Even when you go through your progressions and the checkdown isn’t there, then what? That’s where I feel like I’ve made strides — getting through my reads and getting to the checkdown. Now the biggest jump I’ll say for me, and something I plan on showing and continuing to improve, is what I do when there’s no play there — when I can’t get out of it and I can’t run. What am I going to do with the ball?”
Shedeur Sanders Has ‘Utmost Respect’ for Browns Coach Kevin Stefanski
Sanders is not the only one facing an uncertain future in Cleveland. Speculation is swirling on if Browns coach Kevin Stefanski will remain with the team next season. A lot has been made about the relationship between Sanders and Stefanski, but the Browns quarterback backed his head coach amid the rumors.
“We view him as the same as we viewed him the first week. We got the utmost respect for him. I think that’s more media stuff. That’s more outside noise. Half of us don’t know if we gonna be here next year, you know what I’m saying?” Sanders said. “We play for the franchise, we play for our coaches, we play for the names on the front and back of our jersey. So, it’s more than just like stuff that’s just online.”
The Browns wrap up their season Sunday on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals.
