Shedeur Sanders Walks Back Controversial Comments After 1st Browns Start

Shedeur Sanders is taking back the comments he made after his first start with the Cleveland Browns.

Sanders started in Week 12 on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders due to Dillon Gabriel being in concussion protocol. The rookie quarterback played well as he didn’t make too many mistakes and helped Cleveland get a big 24-10 road win.

Following the win, Sanders said if he gets a full offseason and training camp as the starter, he will make the Browns’ offense dangerous. However, many fans were critical of those comments, and ahead of his second NFL start, he walked it back and claimed he was joking.

“Yeah, that was just jokes, man,” Sanders said on Wednesday. “A lot of people took that out of context. But you gotta understand, the past six, seven months been hard. So, I wanna definitely be thankful that I am able to work out with those guys and knowing I do have a great defense and knowing I came this far.

“So, I was truly amazed. I was truly happy, of course, in that moment that the work had been paying off, but I’m not comfortable.”

It’s interesting that Sanders decided to walk back his comments, as his focus is now on Sunday and starting at home against a very tough San Francisco 49ers defense.

Sanders Believes Browns Offense Could be Dangerous

After Sanders led the Browns to a win in his first NFL start, he made a bold comment on his future.

The rookie quarterback campaigned to be the long-term answer for the Browns, as he believes he can make Cleveland’s offense dangerous.

“I think I showed a couple of great pieces. There’s some things I wish I could get back,” Sanders told CBS Sports sideline reporter Tiffany Blackmon. “But man, a win is crazy. It’s amazing, you know, after one week of practice. … So imagine, you know, what a full offseason look like. It get dangerous.”

It was a bold comment from Sanders, who has the utmost confidence in himself. But, not even a week later, he walked back those comments, as instead, he’s now taking it one game at a time.

Kevin Stefanski Preparing Sanders for 49ers Defense

Sanders’ second NFL start will be against a tough 49ers defense.

Ahead of the matchup, Stefanski said he’s helping prepare Sanders for the tough test.

“It’s always helpful, and I think San Francisco will get a similar look from their scout team defense this week,” Stefanski said. “Anytime you can have your players…our scout teams trying to act like the 49ers and play the 49ers and you’re holding the card.

“Anytime you can just tell them to play your defense, you’re going to get a better look. So, certainly I think the look will be better for the quarterbacks. And then just the built-up reps of going up against the scheme. Now there are significant differences between the schemes. I think obviously the attack front is where we’re similar. Coverages can be very different.”

The Browns enter the matchup as a 4.5-point underdog.
