The Boston Red Sox have made a few trades this offseason, but other than that, they are one of two MLB teams (Colorado Rockies) that have handed out zero major league contracts during MLB’s free agency period. Boston traded for Sonny Gray back in November, and then traded for Johan Oviedo in a move that isn’t exactly “needle-moving”.
Boston has been linked to several of the big-name free agents this winter, but has been unable to reach a deal with any of them, and the Red Sox have a big decision to make within their organization on what to do with third baseman Alex Bregman. A recent report indicates that the Red Sox are interested in under-the-radar bullpen piece Danny Coulombe, who pitched the 2025 season with the Twins and Rangers.

Red Sox Reportedly Interested in Danny Coulombe.
A recent report by MassLive.com reporter Chris Cotillo indicates that the Boston Red Sox have expressed interest in southpaw reliever Danny Coulombe, who posted a 2.30 ERA in 2025 over 55 appearances and 43 innings.
Coulombe was a part of the fire sale by the Minnesota Twins back in July, but his time with the Twins came in the better half of his 2025 season. In 31 innings with the Twins last season, Coulombe posted a stellar 1.16 ERA.
After being dealt to the Texas Rangers for their playoff push, however, the 36-year-old struggled a bit. Over 12 innings with Texas, Coulombe had a 5.25 ERA and walked nine batters.

He has largely been a journeyman throughout MLB, primarily used out of the bullpen. After coming up with the Dodgers in 2014, Danny Coulombe bounced around from a few different teams, including two stints with the Twins, before being traded.

Should the Red Sox Target Danny Coulombe?
The Red Sox should absolutely make a run for Danny Coulombe. His market value isn’t much, but Craig Breslow indicated to reporters at MLB’s winter meetings earlier this month that Boston doesn’t need to make a huge impact signing for a relief pitcher, but an under-the-radar signing like this would help Boston’s pitching staff depth.
Coulombe has made 149 appearances since 2023, which proves he’s a durable arm that can match up against lefties throughout the season.
If the Red Sox were to add Coulombe, he’d join a group of bullpen arms that includes closer Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, Greg Weissert, Justin Slaten, etc.
According to BaseballReference.com, Coulombe is projected to pitch 50 innings in 2026 and post a 3.42 ERA with 48 strikeouts.
