Sixers’ Daryl Morey Gets Real on Offseason Goals

The Philadelphia 76ers have been fairly busy to begin the 2025 NBA offseason. Daryl Morey has added VJ Edgecombe and Johni Broome via the draft. He’s signed Trendon Watford to a two-year deal, and added Jabari Walker and Dominick Barlow on two-way contracts.

Furthermore, the Sixers have re-signed veterans Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon. However, they did wave goodbye to Guerschon Yabusele and are still in negotiations with Quentin Grimes.

Nevertheless, Morey has begun reshaping the roster around his two aging, injury-prone stars. During a recent media availability, Morey discussed his desire for the Sixers rotation to become younger and more athletic heading into the new season.

“I think we went in with a big goal of being younger and more athletic among the group that we think will likely be on the floor,” Morey said, per the Philly Voice. “I feel we’ve done that…I think around Joel and Paul, I think pretty much every likely rotation player is 27, 28 or younger. So, yeah, we’re looking forward to that, and optimistic on where things are at with Joel. So, yeah, looking forward to next season.”

Judging by Morey’s comments, the Sixers may look to play at a higher tempo next season, with more focus on getting downhill and creating out of drives. Nevertheless, if Embiid and George aren’t healthy, the Sixers will struggle to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference.

Sixers Warned of Losing Tyrese Maxey

ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins, speaking via a recent episode of ESPN’s First Take, recently warned the Sixers that they could risk losing Tyrese Maxey unless they turn around their recent struggles.

“They’re on the clock when it comes down to Tyrese Maxey, and when I say on the clock,” Perkins said. “…Because if they keep trending in this direction of no culture and no stability, guess what? Tyrese Maxey is gonna want out of Philadelphia, and we know who his agent is, it’s Rich Paul. And Rich Paul doesn’t give a damn. I’m telling you this – this is something I know.”

Maxey, 24, will undoubtedly step into a leading role when Embiid eventually leaves the franchise. He’s already proving himself to be an essential part of the Sixers rotation, both for now and the future. Therefore, Morey must ensure the decisions he’s making align with Maxey’s goals. Otherwise, Philadelphia runs the risk of the young star becoming disillusioned with the franchise.

Sixers Have no Timeline for Embiid Recovery

Embiid underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee in April, 2025. However, during a recent interview with  ESPN’s Dotun Akintoye, Embiid explained how he currently doesn’t have a timeline for a return to on-court activities.

“We don’t have a timeline,” Embiid told Akintoye. “Hopefully, sooner rather than later…I don’t know how they (the Sixers) feel. The only thing I’d say is — this is a business. It’s all about the results…If I come back early enough and I’m still not myself, guess what? You’re not winning any games.”

The Sixers need Embiid to be fully healthy next season. If that means keeping him out of the rotation to begin the new campaign, so be it. After all, he’s needed for the playoffs, not the opening weeks of the season. Still, its understandable if the fanbase isn’t sold that he can stay healthy long enough to help the team make a deep postseason run.

Only time will tell.
