Spurs Express Interest in Blockbuster Trade for Superstar: Report

The San Antonio Spurs are in a great position to land Kevin Durant should they strike.

According to ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania, the Spurs are one of the five teams that have expressed interest in a blockbuster trade for Durant this summer.

A Durant trade is a foregone conclusion, as Charania reported that talks between the Phoenix Suns and Durant’s business partner, Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman, have escalated this past week.

They have met “multiple times over the past week and are sifting through trade scenarios.”

“Teams that have expressed interest in Durant, sources said, mainly feature the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks. Several wild-card suitors have made inquiries on Durant in the past seven to 10 days, sources said,” Charania wrote.

The only mystery left is where Durant is headed next.

Will it be San Antonio?

The Spurs have three tradable first-round picks, including this year’s No. 2 pick, which is likely Rutgers star Dylan Harper. But it will be unwise to deal the presumed No. 2 pick for a 37-year-old Durant. They could easily match Durant’s $54.7 million salary in a potential trade with the trio of Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes and Jeremy Sochan.

The potential holdup is the draft capital and the young player that the Suns would ask to include.

Spurs, Kevin Durant Have Mutual Interest

In April, Charania reported that Durant and the Spurs have mutual interest.

“Back at the NBA trade deadline, there was a list of teams with whom there was mutual interest with Kevin Durant,” Charania said on “The Pat McAfee Show” at the time. “Those teams, from my understanding, are Minnesota, that’s New York, Houston, San Antonio and Miami.

“Those are the types of teams, from my understanding, that had interest then, and I expect them all to be in the mix this offseason. But the biggest thing to keep an eye on for all NBA fans and fans of those teams is: How does your team finish in the playoffs? How do the playoffs go? Because that’s going to really determine who feels like they’re a Kevin Durant away.”

The Spurs did not qualify for the playoffs as their doomed season was marred by longtime head coach Gregg Popovich’s mild stroke and the season-ending injuries to top stars Victor Wembanyama (deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder) and De’Aaron Fox (left-hand surgery).

But Wembanyama and Fox are expected to be ready for next season. If they successfully land Durant, they will form a new Big Three in the stacked Western Conference. A starting five of Wembanyama, Durant and Fox along with Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle (if they are not included in the trade), would be a force to be reckoned with.

Bill Simmons Believes Kevin Durant Deal is Already Done

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons believes a Durant to San Antonio might already be a done deal.

Simmons believes there is a chance that the Suns and the Spurs have already worked out a deal in principle that would send Durant to San Antonio. He relayed that possibility during a live edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast with Ryen Russillo after Sunday’s Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already, and they just haven’t announced it,” Simmons said during a live edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast with Ryen Russillo after Sunday’s Game 2 of the NBA Finals. “Like they’ve agreed on the specifics, and they’ll just announce it the week of the draft.”

The NBA Draft is on June 25 and 26 in Brooklyn, New York.
