The Detroit Lions suffered a major blow when star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown went down early in their Thanksgiving Day game against the Green Bay Packers, limping off to the locker room and not returning.
Though St. Brown avoided a long-term injury, his status for this week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys is now in question. The Lions lost their grip on a playoff spot with last week’s loss, and could lose more ground in a competitive NFC if St. Brown doesn’t return.
Question Marks Surround Amon-Ra St. Brown
With the Lions facing another short week before hosting the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, St. Brown said he’s not sure if he will recover in time to return. The Pro Bowl receiver told reporters on Tuesday that his status was still up in the air.
“I’m not sure right now, if I’m being honest,” St. Brown said, via Pride of Detroit’s Jeremy Reisman. “It’s still up in the air. I’ma try to be out there for the guys, for my teammates, but I couldn’t answer that question right now.”
St. Brown was hurt while blocking on a running play, getting rolled from behind and spraining his ankle. The veteran receiver said he’s familiar with ankle injuries and has been able to come back, but was experiencing too much pain to return on Thanksgiving.
“I mean, I’ve had ankle sprains before, and I was able to come back during the game, but this one, I just, I couldn’t,” St. Brown said, via MLive.com. “The pain was just too much. It was tough watching the game on the sideline. I don’t know how many games I’ve watched on the sideline or not being on the field while being here in Detroit. So it’s tough.”
Lions Have Their Season on the Line
The Lions went on to suffer a costly loss with St. Brown out of the lineup. The loss to the Packers dropped them to eighth place, two full wins behind the San Francisco 49ers for the final wild-card spot. The Athletic gives the Lions a 30% chance to reach the postseason, predicting they will finish 10-7 and land just outside the final playoff spot.
St. Brown told reporters on Tuesday that he could feel disappointment rising as he was being evaluated in the medical tent on the sidelines.
“I felt the guys through the screen,” St. Brown said. “I felt like I let them down by not being out there. So it was tough watching. But I feel like they, you know, I mean, they played their hearts out.”
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said he was confident St. Brown would take the field if he were able, but couldn’t offer any more insight into whether that would be the case.
“I know this about him, if he can play, he’ll play,” Campbell said.
Campbell did say St. Brown would not be out for the long term, but the team could use him against a surging Cowboys team that has won three straight games.
