According to Doug Nestor’s NFL agent, the Pittsburgh Steelers continued to add offensive tackle depth Thursday morning.
Nestor’s representation, Brett Tessler, posted on X that the former West Virginia offensive lineman signed with the Steelers practice squad.
Nestor spent 2025 training camp with the Steelers. The team released the former Mountaineers lineman after their final preseason game on August 21.
Nestor had remained a free agent since then until Thursday morning.
This is the lineman’s second season at the NFL level. As an undrafted free agent last summer, he spent most of 2024 training camp and preseason with the Minnesota Vikings.
He is the third roster move involving an offensive tackle for the Steelers this week. On Wednesday, the Steelers signed Dylan Cook from their practice squad to their active roster. The team also inked David Sharpe to the practice squad.
Nestor hasn’t played in an NFL regular season game.
Steelers Sign Lineman Doug Nestor
A Kenova, West Virgina native, Nestor actually began his college career at Virginia Tech. He also played guard first in his collegiate playing days. The 25-year-old made 10 starts at guard as a freshman in 2019.
Nestor also started seven games at guard in 2020.
After transferring to West Virginia before the 2021 season, he continued to play at guard through 2022. For his redshirt senior season, Nestor moved to right tackle.
According to Steelers Now’s Chris Ward, Nestor didn’t test well at the 2024 NFL combine. That was part of why he went undrafted despite standing at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds.
Nestor spent most of his rookie season on the Steelers practice squad. Ward reported he received opportunities in practice at both tackle and guard. The Steelers signed Nestor to a futures contract in January 2025 after losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs last season.
Steelers Dealing With Multiple Offensive Tackle Injuries
The Steelers have made a flurry of moves for the offensive line because of all the injuries at tackle the team has experienced recently.
Starting left tackle Broderick Jones landed on injured reserve before Week 13. Jones will be out at least two more games, but The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac reported on November 30 Jones is done for the season.
On Sunday, backup left tackle Andrus Peat, who has started the past two games, left because of a concussion. The Steelers have yet to release their first Week 15 injury report, but on Tuesday, head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Peat was in the concussion protocol.
Also on Wednesday, the Steelers placed depth tackle Calvin Anderson on injured reserve.
With potentially Jones, Anderson and Peat all sidelined, the Steelers could start Cook at left tackle versus the Miami Dolphins. Cook made his NFL debut as a practice squad elevation in Week 14.
The Steelers appear to be signing as many tackles to their practice squad as possible for potentially two reasons. They need more depth for the rest of December in case something also happens to Cook. Secondly, the Steelers could elevate any of the tackles on their practice squad to play in addition to Cook versus the Dolphins.
Sharpe and Nestor are officially the only two offensive tackles on the practice squad. But the Steelers also have Jack Driscoll, who is listed as an offensive lineman, and guard Steven Jones on the practice squad.
The Steelers will host the Dolphins on Monday Night Football in Week 15. Because the game is on Monday, Peat will have an extra day to try and clear the concussion protocol to be available for the matchup.
