Sunday was D.K. Metcalf’s most productive day as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, yet it took an unfortunate turn while the Steelers tried to go home.
The Steelers wide receiver ended up in the hospital after going through stomach pains while on the team flight home after their 27-22 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.
Metcalf had seven catches for 148 yards, leading Pittsburgh in yards and targets (12) and finished with more yards than he had in his previous five games combined. Keyed by the combination between Metcalf and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers retook sole possession of first place in the AFC North with the win.
The Steelers (7-6) will host the Miami Dolphins on Monday night at Acrisure Stadium.
D.K. Metcalf Went To A Baltimore Hospital
Metcalf spoke with reporters after the win, and all things seemed to be normal after his second 125-plus-yard performance of the season, which came in arguably the most important game of the season.
“I think we just knew what was at stake, first place in the division,” Metcalf said after the game. “We knew we were coming in and facing a good team, and they had just come off a loss as well, so we knew we were going to get their best shot.”
But he stayed overnight at a hospital in Baltimore after experiencing pain while getting ready to fly back Pittsburgh. According to a statement from Steelers senior director of communications Burt Lauten, Metcalf was scheduled to fly back to Pittsburgh on Monday.
According to the statement, the Steelers medical team advised Metcalf to go to the hospital to rule out any potentially serious internal injuries that could have been sustained during the game.
D.K. Metcalf Is Considered Questionable For The Steelers’ Week 15 Game vs Miami
Metcalf’s robust numbers gave both Steelers fans and fantasy managers alike a lift, especially after Pittsburgh claimed Adam Thielen this week to be their No. 2 wide receiver opposite him.
But Metcalf is being considered questionable after being discharged from the hospital Monday. The wideout has not missed a game this year, and the extra day could give him a better chance of playing against the suddenly surging Dolphins, who have won four straight and five of six games.
If Metcalf can’t go, it’ll be a huge blow to the Steelers offense, since they had struggled in the passing game over their previous seven games where they had gone 2-5. Rodgers ranks 27th in the NFL in yards per game (197.5) and averaged 177.5 yards per game over his past six outings.
Plus, the win Sunday may have been massive for Pittsburgh’s playoff chances, but it still has more work to do. The Steelers have a 67 percent chance of reaching the playoffs — the lowest of any team currently in the AFC field — and Monday night’s game is huge, since they are just a game over the Dolphins for a wild-card spot.
Pittsburgh will close with games against the Dolphins, at the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns before closing at home against the Ravens in Week 18.
Pittsburgh will need Metcalf at least on the field, since he has twice as many receiving yards as Calvin Austin III (309), who ranks second on the team.
