Steelers Host All-Pro Safety for Workout After Miles Killebrew Injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers are cruising to start the 2025 NFL campaign. After taking down the Cleveland Browns in Week 6, the Steelers pushed their record to 4-1, giving them complete control over the AFC North division. With the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens floundering, that has opened the door for Pittsburgh to cruise to a division title.

There’s still a lot of work left to be done, though, and if there’s one thing that could come back to haunt the team, its injuries. In the team’s win over the Browns, one player who departed early was veteran safety Miles Killebrew, and after he was revealed to have suffered a significant knee injury, the team has begun looking to replace him during his impending absence.

Steelers Bring George Odum in for Free Agent Visit

Killebrew has made a career out of being a special teams ace, as he’s filled that role for the Steelers over the past five seasons. Generally speaking, Killebrew has been one of the top special teams aces in the league recently, as he earned a spot on the All-Pro First Team in 2023, while also earning Pro Bowl selections in each of the past two seasons.

In the win over the Browns, though, Killebrew was forced off the field prematurely with a knee injury, and it didn’t seem like he would be returning to action very soon. While no definitive timeline has been provided, Killebrew has already been ruled out for Week 7, which is never a good sign.

With Killebrew set to miss time, that led Pittsburgh to turn to the free agent market in search of a potential replacement. On Tuesday, the team brought another former All-Pro First Team special teams ace to town for a free agent visit. That player is George Odum, who most recently played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.

“The Steelers hosted veteran safety and former All-Pro special teamer George Odum for a visit today. Notable given Miles Killebrew’s significant knee injury,” Nick Farabaugh of PennLive wrote in a post on X.

Should the Steelers Sign George Odum in Free Agency?

Odum initially made a name for himself with the Indianapolis Colts, as he earned a spot on the All-Pro First Team in 2020. After the 2021 campaign, Odum found his way to the 49ers, which is where he spent the past three seasons. In 2022, Odum earned a spot on the All-Pro Second Team, but he missed time with injuries in 2023 and 2024, which led to a decrease in his overall production.

There’s no doubt that Odum has a track record of success in the NFL, but it’s unknown how much he has left in the tank. He hasn’t suited up at all this season, meaning it will likely take him some time to get back up to game speed. If the Steelers liked what they saw from Odum during their visit, though, it would certainly make sense to sign him to a deal, as he could be a direct replacement for Killebrew while he’s on the sidelines getting healthy after his recent knee injury.
