Steelers Host ‘Powerful’ DT for Workout, Activate Isaac Seumalo: Report

While the Pittsburgh Steelers received back a key piece of their offensive line at practice Thursday, the team appears to be in the market for additional defensive line depth.

Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders reported Thursday the Steelers will host former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Cameron Young for a workout.

During his draft process two years ago, Young received raved reviews for his raw power from NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein.

“Naturally powerful prospect who is able to take on capable challengers and come out in good shape despite playing with an elevated pad level,” Zierlein wrote. “Young plays with early hands and a heavy punch to gain positioning quickly against single blocks. He has the core power and contact balance to force double teams to work.”

The Seahawks picked Young at No. 123 overall in the fourth round of the 2023 draft.

Pittsburgh is working out Young a day after Esezi Otomewo sustained a knee injury.

Steelers fans will have to wait and see if the team makes a move involving Otomewo or Young. But Pittsburgh did execute a roster move with offensive guard Isaac Seumalo on Thursday.

“Isaac Seumalo returned to practice today and has been activated off the Non-Football Injury List,” posted the Steelers official X account.

Isaac Seumalo Returning to Solidify Steelers Offensive Line

Seumalo’s return is extremely important for Pittsburgh’s inexperienced offensive line. Seumalo has, by far, the most experience of any projected starter along the team’s 2025 offensive front.

Seumalo has started 90 games in his career, including 30 the past two seasons for the Steelers. In 2024, he earned the first Pro Bowl nomination of his career.

The other four projected starters for the Pittsburgh offensive line are 25 or younger. None of them have started more than 27 games in their careers, and three of them were rookies last season.

Left tackle Broderick Jones has been dealing with a groin injury during training camp. But he practiced Wednesday. As long as Jones continues to practice, with Seumalo back, the Steelers will have their five projected starting offensive linemen on the field.

Jones and Seumalo are expected to play next to each other on the left side of the team’s line. The Steelers have projected 2024 draft picks Troy Fautanu and Mason McCormick to start at right tackle and right guard, respectively.

2024 second-round pick Zach Frazier will start at center, where he starred as a rookie last season.

Steelers Working Out Cameron Young After Esezi Otomewo Injury

It’s not yet clear how serious Otomewo’s knee injury is. But it’s not the best sign the Steelers are searching the defensive tackle market one day after he suffered his ailment.

Pittsburgh signed Otomewo to a 1-year, $1.03 million contract this offseason although he will only be a restricted free agent next March.

In nine career NFL games, Otomewo has registered nine combined tackles and two quarterback hits. During four games with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, he had 0.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.

Over two NFL seasons, Young has posted 18 combined tackles, including one tackle for loss. He appeared in one game last season.

With the Seahawks, Young was a much better run stopper than pass rusher.

“He does a nice job of fighting against wash-down blocks and maintaining gap integrity against zone,” Zierlein added in Young’s draft profile. “He has the size, length and strength to become a proficient run defender but offers very little as a pass rusher.

“While Young will be seen as a natural nose tackle, he could see snaps as a 5-technique as well.”
