Steelers’ Most Important Duo Gives Update on Progress at Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ offseason has been anything but ordinary. Not only did the club wait quite a while before welcoming starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers into the fold, but they executed a multitude of transactions to insulate the roster around him. The franchise’s approach to the 2025-26 season is about as “all in” as it gets.

With that in mind, training camp serves as a speed run for building chemistry. On the offensive side of the ball, Rodgers and wide receiver DK Metcalf are hard at work doing just that.

In fact, the two are roommates out at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

Rodgers-Metcalf Chemistry a Healthy Work in Progress at Training Camp

Rodgers, not knowing what the exact setup would be at the training camp site, wasn’t sure what to expect. Although he has to share a room with someone, he sure seems glad that it’s Metcalf. The four-time NFL MVP spoke about that process following practice on Thursday.

“I was surprised,” Rodgers said. “I was here Tuesday night, and not many other guys were here other than the rookies. When I got into the room, I realized we were sharing with someone else. I was secretly hoping it wasn’t a big lineman or something, maybe somebody who cared about their hygiene a little bit. So, when I walked in, I saw a standard suitcase, I said, ‘Well, I think it’s going to be good. This is probably DK.’”

Metcalf thinks this arrangement allows both he and Rodgers to get on the same page.

“I mean, [it helps] a lot,” Metcalf said. “We can talk about a lot of stuff that we see the same on the field, continue conversations we may not get to talk about in the meeting room. He gets to listen to a lot of my music taste or hear me yell at the video game sometimes. It’s just going to be fun having him across the hall from me.”

It’s safe to say this duo could be what makes or breaks the Steelers’ season. At the age of 41 (42 in December), Rodgers is looking to defy Father Time. He’s coming off an underwhelming stint with the New York Jets and is likely entering his final NFL season. Metcalf hasn’t replicated his early success with the Seattle Seahawks. He needs a rebound season as well.

It’s early, but the quarterback-wideout tandem knows it needs each other. Rodgers is optimistic about making progress.

“I think we completed one out of a couple that we had his way,” Rodgers said. “You know, DK and I worked out in the off season together. We have a good relationship, we talked about a lot of football stuff. We FaceTime, we texted during the off season, after minicamps, so we got a good relationship. It’s going to just keep on going.”

Steelers’ Offense Must Make Most of 2025 Camp Reps

Speaking of which, the entire offense should be looking to capitalize at camp. Rodgers and Metcalf aren’t the only ones needing reps. At running back, the combination of veteran Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson comes with both upside and uncertainty. The latter rusher could be an X factor for the upcoming season.

Behind Metcalf at wideout, someone must step up. Early in camp, that player seems to be Roman Wilson. He’s making his presence felt despite Calvin Austin III entering the week with an inside edge on the second receiver gig. Rodgers got off to a bumpy start, but Wilson is doing the exact opposite.

The Steelers do have an embarrassment of riches at tight end. Starter Pat Freiermuth remains reliable. The organization’s acquisition of Pro Bowler Jonnu Smith adds a new dynamic to the attack. It could also mitigate some concerns about less high-end wideout depth than most teams. Heck, even Darnell Washington is a formidable piece.

There’s simultaneously so much already known about this offense, yet even more that still hasn’t been found out. That’s the beauty of training camp, with the Rodgers-Metcalf situation serving as a perfect encapsulation.
