The Phoenix Suns got a major boost ahead of their NBA Cup quarterfinal matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, December 10.
Devin Booker is listed as questionable on the official injury report. The All-Star guard has missed the last two games with a right groin strain, which he suffered in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 1, but it appears he is nearing a return.
Booker has been a key part of a resurgent start for the Suns, leading the team with 25 points and 6.7 assists per game. He is shooting 45.7% from the field and 31.5% from beyond the arc.
Booker is the Suns’ longest tenured player and has spent his entire NBA career in Phoenix. He averages 24.5 points, four rebounds and 5.3 assists on 46.4% shooting from the field and 35.3% from three in 11 seasons in the league.
Is Devin Booker Playing Tonight?
When Booker was initially injured, the timeframe given for the recovery was at least a week, with the guard set to be re-evaluated at the end of it, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. After eight days, Booker has been upgraded to questionable for the first time, certainly a positive sign for his potential return as the Suns square off with the defending NBA champions on Wednesday.
The Suns likely will not rush Booker back, especially given his history of soft-tissue injuries, but if he is feeling ready to play, the guard could get some game action on a minutes restriction against the Thunder.
The more important thing for Booker and the Suns is that he stays healthy for the rest of the season. Phoenix could be a contender come April and May, and it will need its superstar on the court to have a chance of advancing to the NBA Finals.
Phoenix Suns Surprising In Western Conference
The Suns have been a surprise to start the season, after missing the playoffs in 2024-25. They dealt Kevin Durant, still one of the NBA’s best scorers at age 37, to the Houston Rockets in the offseason and have seemingly improved.
Jalen Green, the best player Phoenix received in the deal, has played only two games this season due to a hamstring injury. But Dillon Brooks, the other player who came back in the trade, is having a career year, averaging 22.1 points per game. He has also helped Phoenix improve defensively.
Collin Gillespie is another player who has stepped up and made key contributions for the Suns, especially with Booker sidelined. Over his last three games, the Villanova product is averaging 20 points, four rebounds and four assists on 44.7 % shooting from the field and 42.9 % shooting from three.
Phoenix (14-10) is currently in seventh in the Western Conference, one game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves for the final automatic postseason berth. Getting Booker back in the fold should only help the Suns as they enter the middle of the season.
