Former Super Bowl MVP Dexter Jackson has some simple advice to Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Sanders had hopes of being a first-round pick, but he ended up falling to the fifth round when the Browns ended his slide. Sanders ended up being the third-string quarterback to begin the year, but after the trade of Joe Flacco, he has become the backup to Dillon Gabriel.
Yet, Sanders doesn’t appear to have a clear path to playing time, but Jackson has some advice for the rookie quarterback, whose name has also come up in trade rumors.
“For Shedeur Sanders, the situation is to keep quiet, be patient and keep working,” Jackson said to Betway. “His time will come in Cleveland. … Shedeur would bring a different presence to the game. One thing he definitely will bring is fans to seats and eyes to screens. There’s a lot of people who want to see him do well, and there’s a lot of people who want to see him fail.
“If he stays patient, continues to develop his game and be a professional, he will get an opportunity to be a starting quarterback. If he prepares himself for when his opportunity arrives, he can go out there and be successful. He needs to prepare, keep quiet, be a pro and when the time comes, let his play do the talking.”
Jackson was named MVP of Super Bowl XXXVIII, as the star safety believes Sanders has the tools to be a good NFL quarterback. But, for the time being, Jackson believes Sanders needs to be quiet and just work on his game to prove he’s a good NFL quarterback.
Jackson Confused Browns Traded Flacco
Cleveland did make a surprising move by trading Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals, and Jackson was surprised by it.
Jackson thinks Flacco would have been good to mentor Gabriel and Sanders all year long.
“I was surprised they traded him at all,” Jackson said. “You have two rookie quarterbacks. Who is helping to develop those guys? As an organization, the Browns do not do a good job of developing young quarterbacks, so what better way to develop than having a veteran like Flacco around for them to learn from?
“Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes all had to sit, and they turned out pretty good. A lot of these great quarterbacks started off as backups learning how to understand the game. The Browns should’ve continued to let Gabriel and Sanders learn from a veteran player who understands the game.”
Instead, the Browns are rolling with a quarterback room of Gabriel, Sanders, and Bailey Zappe, who’s on the practice squad.
Kevin Stefanski Sticking With Gabriel
Despite Gabriel struggling again in Week 8, the Browns will remain with him going forward.
Fans have been clamouring for Sanders to get a shot, especially with the offense struggling under Gabriel. However, Stefanski confirmed after the game that Gabriel will remain the starter after the bye.
“When I say look at everything, when you lose like this, you have to look at everything,” Stefanski said. “Every position, everything I’m doing. There’s just — it’s frustrating for where we are as a team. Every position you have to look at. But let me say that with a young quarterback, you understand there’s going to be ups and downs.”
The Browns are on their bye week before going on the road to play the New York Jets in Week 10.
