Gareth Southgate’s decision to snub Cole Palmer has come as a surprise to Switzerland star Kwadwo Duah ahead of their Euro 2024 clash against England.

The Three Lions take on the Red Crosses in the quarter-finals on Saturday evening in Dusseldorf.

Much has been made of England’s underwhelming performances at the tournament so far, with this match set to be a tough test given the Swiss’ impressive displays.

One of the major talking points has been Southgate’s team selections, with several players repeatedly left out despite their teammates’ struggles.

One such example is Palmer who was left on the bench for the opening two games before finally coming on for the last 19 minutes of the goalless draw against Slovenia.

The attacking midfielder had a lively impact and impressed again when he came on against Slovakia, helping his side avoid an embarrassing exit at the last 16 stage.

Having scored 27 goals and made 15 assists last season, there has been a great clamour for the young Chelsea star to start for his country, and one of his future opponents admits he is confused as to why Southgate isn’t picking him.

Swiss striker Duah, who was born in London, said: ‘Of course, I follow English football. I would say I’m a big Chelsea fan, my idol is Didier Drogba.

‘[Palmer] had a very, very good season. I’m also thinking, “Why is he not playing?” because his stats were perfect in my opinion.

‘Let’s see if he starts at the weekend.’

There have been calls for Palmer, 22, to start on the right-wing and move Bukayo Saka to left-back, while Southgate has claimed that the Arsenal star has been preferred up to this point due to his experience.

The manager said: ‘Slightly different players, but both of them favour their left foot and coming in, rolling off the right wing. Bukayo perhaps is more direct, more speed and more experienced, clearly.’

‘Cole is adapting well to, firstly, the Premier League this season and then life with us as well.

‘So we are very happy with both players. Both have contributed really well and you want your changes to make a difference.’
