Cox had previously been interim boss of Wealdstone, helping them beat the National League drop.

And he also featured in the hit TV show Ted Lasso, which stars Jason Sudeikis as a fictional American coach managing in the Premier League.

Cox played a West Ham player called Armando in the third season of the Apple TV production.

Commenting on his role on Ted Lasso, Cox said: “It was a fantastic experience.

“Not in a million years did I think I’d be getting the opportunity to be going on a global TV series.”

Fans reacted with delight to the news of Cox’s Oxford gig, with one making a Ted Lasso joke: “I guess Roy Kent was busy when you called.”

Another declared: “Fantastic good luck.”

One noted: “Top, top guy.”

Another added: “Hope you have a wonderful season.”

Cox’s playing career saw him feature for clubs including Boreham Wood, Wealdstone and Welling United.

He also picked up 26 caps for Guyana and was named their captain in 2019 after qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time ever.

Cox was named Wealdstone interim boss in April following David Noble’s exit.

He won three of his five games at the helm to beat the drop on the final day of the season.

And Cox now hopes his experiences can lead Oxford City back to the National League.

He said: “I know where I feel I can get this football club, and I’m going to do my very best to do that.

“Positivity — a style and philosophy that is hopefully attractive, and ultimately winning football matches.”
