Queen Elizabeth II Stakes runner-by-runner guide

ART POWER

POWER needs cut. Was only 12th in this last season on quick ground but showed his class by finishing the season winning the Champions Sprint here on soft. He ran well behind Regional at The Curragh last time but all his best form has come with cut in the ground.

JUMBY

PASS By. Has solid form in lesser company but the pick of it has come over seven furlongs. He won a Group 3 contest this time last year but has largely struggled since including at Haydock last time. Tries blinkers for the first time in his long career and this looks tough.

KHAADEM

KHAA rusty. Last win was this race 12 months ago on fast ground and hasn’t shown a massive amount since then. Looked rusty from a bad draw at York last time and hard to see him repeating last year’s 80-1 shock despite his liking for the track.

KINROSS

ROSS may boss. High-class over this trip and seven furlongs on any ground. He was just pipped in the Champions Sprint here last time out in October and this trip and track are ideal. The worry is he usually needs his first run of the season and that’s the only thing putting me off.

MILL STREAM

FAST Stream. He was held in a couple of Group 1s last season including when not getting the best of runs in the Champions Sprint. He clocked a personal best when just holding on at York in a hot contest last time and his finishing style off a fast pace suits this race. His best has come with some cut so far but it’s early days and he could improve again.

MITBAAHY

BAA may star. He’s been held in a couple of Group 1s but they were over five furlongs and he really enjoyed this trip when coming with a late rattle to strike at The Curragh last time. He was blocked a couple of times so it was a mighty effort. Hold-up horses often do well in this race and Jamie Spencer could time his challenge to perfection again. Shortlisted.

QUINAULT

QUIN won’t win. Has solid handicap form including when winning here over further. Likes firm ground but struggled in a Haydock Group 3 and this looks too hot.

SHARTASH

RED-HOT Ash. The latest expensive Wathnan Racing buy after he tanked to victory in a fast time at Haydock last month. A stiff six furlongs like this should be ideal and he’s happy on any ground. He has only been with Archie Watson for two runs and there’s more to come.

SHOULDVEBEENARING

RING wrung. Yet to win beyond Listed and was only midfield in the Commonwealth Cup last year. Ran well at York two starts ago before a modest effort at The Curragh. Needs more.

THE WIZARD OF EYE

EYE’LL pass, thanks. Won the Victoria Cup handicap here last time over further and not sure this drop in distance and hike in class is a wise move even with Ryan Moore on board.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS

WASH up. Good run at York last time after solid Newbury success over this trip on fast ground. Is on the upgrade and could nick a place if stepping up further.

BELIEVING

I’M a Believer. Finished well into fourth in the King Charles II here on Tuesday and this extra furlong looks ideal. This ground is ideal and she’ll have more time to hit top gear here as the line came too soon over the minimum trip. She needs to find a bit more but that’s more than possible.

SWINGALONG

IN the Swing. Cracking third in Commonwealth Cup last season and went well from a bad draw in the Champions Sprint. Likes fast ground over this trip and is fit from her York comeback. More needed to win but has place hopes.

VADREAM

DREAM on. Ran poorly in King Charles III on Tuesday and has yet to win beyond Group 3 level and that was a while ago. Has shown her best here but this looks a very tall order.

Templegate’s tip

SHARTASH can grab the cash in today’s £1million Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (3.45 Ascot).

The Wathnan Racing silks have seen plenty of glory this week and this improving four-year-old can add to their tally.

Kinross will be a danger even if he usually needs this first run of the season and could do with the ground softer.

This a challenge should be ideal for Believing who was a cracking fourth in the King Charles III Stakes on Tuesday.

Mill Stream has been well backed after hitting the target at York last time and is high on the shortlist.
