Tennessee Titans’ Players Have Blunt Response for Rookie

It’s never good when your team is struggling and the main story line four days after your latest loss is your quarterback’s post-game comments. Following the Tennessee Titans embarrassing 26-0 shutout loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, quarterback Cam Ward offered his honest assessment of the situation.

Ward, specifically, said, “we ass.” It’s not known at this time whether or not t-shirts are being printed up as we speak.

Head coach Brian Callahan certainly didn’t appreciate the comments, mainly because they spoke volumes about the job he’s been doing.

Some of Ward’s teammates said the right things on advising him to tone it down.

Cam Ward’s fellow Titans would prefer he say less

Defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons is one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL and a leader on the Titans. He’s been around a while and it sounds like he would like – for Cam’s sake – to have him not say things the media will twist.

“Cam has the right to speak how he wants to speak to the media, but I had some advice for him,” Simmons said, per Paul Kuharsky. “I’ll keep that off the record. When these microphones are in front of you, they can blow up just one part of what you are saying.”

Linebacker Cody Barton sounded offended if I’m being honest.

“We talked to him and he didn’t mean it, it came off bad,” Barton said. “We knew what he meant, but we just told him, you’ve got to be careful with your words, and that’s that. We’re with Cam, he’s one of our teammates, we all love him and so there’s no animosity or anything like that toward him.”

Sounded bad to who, Cody? You are 0-4, just got shutout, there are calls for your head coach’s job and opposing players have claimed that the Titans didn’t even want to be out there playing.

Cam Ward wasn’t surprised by the reaction to his comments

Ward was asked if he was shocked by the reactions of his teammates, coaches and the media.

“Not really,” he said. “They’re going to blow it up no matter what, whether it’s good or bad for the Titans. We’re trying to go win football games, that’s the biggest thing and that’s what we’re trying to go do this week.”

Earlier this week, seemingly spent more time replying to his quarterback’s comments than he did working on game plans.

“He’s a young player,” Callahan said. “He’s the No. 1 overall pick, he’s the face of the franchise, if you will. He’s got high expectations for himself, and we have high expectations around him, and we all want to meet those.

“His ability to be in that spotlight, in that moment is a growing process for him. He’s growing up, I think he’s starting to understand the weight of his words – what those things mean when he speaks and everyone’s listening and watching. And even though he follows up his commentary with a lot of the right things, it’s the one-liner that gets taken.”
