Texans Add Versatile Veteran to Roster Ahead of Showdown Against Jaguars

The Houston Texans continued the roster shuffle before taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10, particularly in their banged-up secondary, where they will call on veteran defensive back Myles Bryant.

They have made several moves on the backend, and injuries will have an impact.

However, the Texans are very familiar with the versatile veteran, Bryant, who is in his sixth season in the NFL.

Texans Elevate Myles Bryant From Practice Squad for Jaguars Game

Bryant is in his second season with the Texans, and he could see the field often against the Jaguars.

The Texans are elevating veteran defensive back Myles Bryant from the practice squad to the active roster for the third time this season, per a league source,” KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson wrote on November 8.

“Bryant is a versatile player who has experience at nickel and has played safety and outside corner. Texans nickel Jalen Pitre is out for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a concussion. The Texans are expected to use their base 4-3 defense a lot and Bryant can be utilized in nickel situations.”

The Texans also placed rookie third-round pick Jaylin Smith on injured reserve.

Bryant entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2020. He has 214 total tackles, 4 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, 2.0 sacks, and 1 recovery in his career.

The Texans have already shuffled their safety group, cutting offseason trade acquisition C.J. Gardner-Johnson. They replaced him with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-round pick (2018) M.J. Stewart.

The Texans’ defense has held up well since they cut Gardner-Johnson, who has since signed with the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad and is now on the Chicago Bears’ active roster.

But attrition could start taking a toll if Bryant (and Stewart) cannot hold up.

Texans Bring Back UDFA CB Alijah Huzzie

The Texans’ secondary shuffle began earlier in the week, with rookie cornerback Alijah Huzzie cut and former Las Vegas Raiders first-round draft pick Damon Arnette taking his spot on the 53-man roster.

Huzzie was not a free agent for long.

#Texans are re-signing cornerback Alijah Huzzie … to practice squad after the rookie cleared waivers today, per a league source,” Wilson reported on X on November 7.

The Texans activated Huzzie, who went undrafted out of North Carolina this past April, from the Reserve/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list on November 5. Huzzie has yet to get into a game for the Texans this season.

Texans Navigating Significant Injury Concerns

Pitre is one of several noteworthy injuries the Texans must overcome to defeat the Jaguars in Week 10, joining teammates offensive linemen Ed Ingram and Tytus Howard, kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, and, most notably, quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Davis Mills is stepping in for Stroud, while Blake Fisher and Juice Scruggs will replace Howard and Ingram, respectively.

The Texans signed veteran and former Jaguars kicker Matthew Wright to replace Fairbairn.

The Texans enter this contest ranked first in scoring and overall defense, and they are fourth against the pass. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence could make it a point to target Bryant as the weak link in an otherwise stout secondary.
