The Houston Texans decided to move on, but they almost certainly did not want to see the situation around former draft pick and running back Dameon Pierce unfold the way that it did, with the fourth-year player signing with an upcoming opponent.
To make matters worse, Pierce joined the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Texans will visit the Chiefs in Week 14, potentially with Pierce taking on a considerable workload in the opposing backfield.

âSources: The #Chiefs are signing former #Texans RB Dameon Pierce,â Fox Sportsâ Jordan Schultz reported on X on November 22. âPierce had over 1,100 yards as a rookie and also has experience as a returner. The 25-year-old will start on the practice squad.
âAfter a crucial AFC win over the #Colts, more good news for the #Chiefs, who will have Dameon Pierce in the building tomorrow.â
The Texans waived Pierce just ahead of their eventual Week 12 win over the Buffalo Bills.
Pierce, 25, was the No. 107 overall pick of the 2022 draft. He rushed for over 900 yards and had 4 touchdowns on the ground as a rookie. However, his role dwindled every year thereafter. The Texans even upgraded the group around him, further signaling their intent to move on.
After acquiring Joe Mixon via trade from the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2024 offseason, the Texans signed former Cleveland Browns star Nick Chubb in free agency.
Then, the Texans selected Woody Marks with the No. 116 overall pick in the 2025 draft.
Even with Mixon sidelined this season, the Texans gave Pierce 10 carries, which he turned into 26 yards. Pierce was mired in trade speculation since last season, but prospective suitors likely held back, knowing the Texans could ultimately do what they did.

Pierce goes from the Texans to a Chiefs team that is also dealing with an injury to their starter, Isiah Pacheco, who sat out the teamâs Week 12 win over the Colts. Pierce was not hard up for suitors, despite landing with the Chiefsâ practice squad.
âFormer #Texans starting running back Dameon Pierce, who’s signing with #Chiefs practice squad, had offers from #Chargers #Broncos #Bears #Eagles #Colts #Bengals,â KPRC 2âs Aaron Wilson reported on X on November 23, âalong with interest from #Dolphins per #NFL sources.â
Pierce will still have to make it to the active roster, at least on game day, to face the Texans.
He joins a backfield that includes Kareem Hunt and rookie Brashard Smith, who is more of a gadget player and change-of-pace option than a featured back, like Pierce can be.
Texans Move Forward With Nick Chubb, Woody Marks

Head coach DeMeco Ryans and the Texans do not know when or if Mixon will return this season, leaving Chubb and Marks to carry the workload, especially with Pierce gone.
Dare Ogunbowale is still on the Texansâ roster, but he has 18 yards on three carries compared to five receptions for 36 yards and 1 touchdown this season. He has also gotten most of his playing time on special teams.
The Texans also have British Brooks, but he is a fullback with a 4-15-0 line in 2025.
2024 sixth-round selection Jawhar Jordan is on the practice squad. It is most likely Chubb and Marks the rest of the way for the Texans, who rank 23rd in the run game offensively this season.
