Texans Poach Versatile Former 49ers Draft Pick From NFC Rival

More work was needed to address the roster, even after C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans’ first win of the 2025 season. So, the Texans turned to offensive lineman Jarrett Kingston, announcing the signing on X and their website on September 30.

The Texans have shuffled their offensive line around quite a bit since the start of this past offseason, and they just traded offensive tackle Cam Robinson to the Cleveland Browns.

Now, the Texans add Kingston, whose body type and playing style make him a tweener.

Kingston joins the Texans after spending the 2024 season and training camp in 2025 with the Carolina Panthers. However, he entered the league as a sixth-round pick (No. 215 overall) of the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.

Despite missing Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, the 49ers’ former defensive coordinator, by two seasons, Kingston was able to pique the Houston HC’s interest.

The Texans and Panthers held joint training camp practices and faced off during the preseason.

“Per his agency, OL Jarrett Kingston has signed w/ the #Texans (from the Panthers practice squad),” Sports Talk 790’s Adam Wexler reported on X on September 30. “Texans saw him in person at joint workout & his 32 snaps this preseason vs Texans. Kingston began his CFB career at Wash St in 2018. Finished at USC in 2023. Was college teammate of Cam Ward. Has seen action on 1 offensive snap & 24 sp. teams snaps after being drafted in 6th rd in 2024.”

Kingston ran a 5.02 40-yard dash and logged 32 reps on the bench press (225 pounds) during the 2024 combine, per Pro Football Focus. He played in seven games for the Panthers in 2024. He logged 25 snaps, with 24 of them coming on special teams, per Pro Football Reference.

Patterson has to learn the Texans’ offense first, but he could become an emergency option.

Kingston joins a Texans offensive line that starts (from left to right) rookie second-round pick Aireontae Ersery alongside veterans Laken Tomlinson, Jake Andrews, Ed Ingram, and Tytus Howard, with 2023 second-rounder Juice Scruggs a sixth man, rotating in at left guard.

His pre-draft profile from NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein revealed a potential multi-positional asset of a player.

However, it also noted how and why Kingston could struggle to latch on just yet.

“Offensive lineman who has the grit, play strength and know-how to play guard, but his size and length could prevent it. Kingston has been well-trained in pass protection, with a steady posture and quick hand strikes, but he could have issues when he’s on an island and forced to defend both gaps against an athletic rusher,” Zierlein wrote in 2024.

“Capable of making zone-scheme blocks and does an admirable job of sustaining run blocks for as long as possible. While he never played the position in a collegiate game, Kingston’s future in the NFL might rest on his ability to prove he can snap and move to center.”

The Texans must protect Stroud better, and perhaps Patterson can help. The Tennessee Titans sacked Stroud twice in Week 4, and he has taken at least two sacks in every game so far.
