Texans Teammate Delivers Telling Take About C.J. Stroud Amid Win Streak

The Houston Texans have won three straight games for the first time since Weeks 4 through 6 of last season, and they did it with Davis Mills at quarterback for the injured C.J. Stroud. But anyone suggesting a QB controversy is not paying attention, not to players like Jayden Higgins.

The rookie has not been around as long as some of Stroud’s other targets, but he was on the sidelines during the Texans’ win over the Buffalo Bills on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 12.

There and then, Stroud showed his true colors.

When one fan took to social media to suggest that Stroud was in some way displeased amid Higgins and the Texans’ celebration of defeating the Bills, and then another attempted to push the narrative, Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper ripped the idea.

Asked about Stroud’s interactions with his teammates during the game, Higgins spoke candidly.

He said Stroud was “for sure” a positive presence on the Texans’ sidelines, offering encouragement and insights.

“He’s always looking at the iPad, and telling us what he sees and things like that,” Higgins told “Kickin’ it with Kunkel” host Will Kunkel after the game on November 20. And then just kind of just continuing to motivate us as well.”

Before that, Higgins already noted that Stroud was in a playful mood, at least with him.

Higgins admitted being “shocked” following his touchdown reception after having an earlier opportunity go incomplete.

“When I got my two feet in on that catch, I was happy because the ones before I didn’t, man. It was crazy. I came to the sideline, and they were like, ‘Come on, man. You got to get two feet in.’ And C.J. started messing with me, saying I couldn’t get two feet in and all types of stuff. So, it was definitely cool to get two feet in there.”

Higgins finished the contest with four receptions for 38 yards and the score.

Nico Collins Gets Honest About Texans’ QBs

Davis Mills, Houston Texans

Meanwhile, Mills and Stroud’s top target, Nico Collins, finished with a 3-55-0 line in the Texans’ win. Collins experienced an uptick in production with Mills under center.

Still, he noted the Texans’ focus regarding their quarterback situation was on Stroud’s health.

“Davis came in, did his thing. Came in, led the way we all knew he was going to do, and my guy went 3-0, man. Love that. But I’m glad 7’s [Stroud’s jersey number] back. Get ready for Indy, big division game, and on the road from there,” Collins told KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson during a charity event on November 21.

“He been ready since Day 1 – Not day one, but ever since … last week. And he been up and coming. Slowly, but he’s on his way, for sure.”

Collins and Mills entered the league in the same draft class.

However, the wideout reached his first Pro Bowl in 2024, with Stroud – the No. 2 overall pick of the draft, and was the Offensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowler in 2023 – as the Texans’ starting quarterback.

For that, and many other reasons, there is no quarterback controversy between Mills, who noted his teammate’s help during the game, and Stroud.

At least, not as far as the Texans are concerned.
