Patrick Dorgu will be suspended for three games after being shown a straight red card during Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Ipswich.

The 20-year-old full-back, a January signing from Lecce, was making only his third appearance for the Red Devils and will have been desperate to impress Ruben Amorim.

However, Dorgu played a role in Jaden Philogene’s comical fourth-minute opener before getting himself sent off in what proved a nightmarish first half for the young Denmark international.

United had hauled themselves back into the driving seat when Dorgu was given his marching orders, with Matthijs de Ligt hitting the target after Ipswich captain Sam Morsy directed the ball into his own net.

But Dorgu’s inexperience showed as he horribly mistimed a challenge on Omari Hutchinson in the 43rd minute, leaving the Ipswich attacker writhing around on the turf at Old Trafford.

Referee Darren England was left with no option but to reach in his pocket and brandish a red card following a VAR review, reducing the home team to ten men for the remainder of the Premier League contest.

Philogene grabbed his second of the night just moments later before Harry Maguire restored United’s advantage with an emphatic header – which proved to be the winner – at the start of the second half.

The matches Dorgu will miss through suspension

Manchester United v Fulham (FA Cup) – March 2

Manchester United v Arsenal (Premier League) – March 9

Leicester v Manchester United (Premier League) – March 16

Dorgu’s red card means he will be forced to miss United’s next three matches in domestic competitions, starting with the club’s FA Cup fifth-round tie against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Amorim will also be without the Dane for United’s upcoming league games at home to Arsenal and away to Leicester.

Dorgu will be available for both legs of United’s round of 16 clash with Real Sociedad.

The former Lecce defender will be given the green light to play in the Premier League again on April 1 when United travel to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest.

Amorim may be tempted to switch Diogo Dalot back over to the left flank during Dorgu’s absence from the side, opening up an opportunity for Noussair Mazraoui at right-back.
