The NBA Veteran With the $2 Million Private Island

For eleven years between 2013 and 2024, North Carolina alum Reggie Bullock played for seven different NBA teams. He would probably like a twelfth year; after all, he never announced he was quitting. But even if his time in the NBA is indeed done, the 34-year-old veteran has found something fun and different to do with his time, one that he is also hoping will turn out to be profitable.

Bullock has purchased a roughly five-acre island, located in the Central American nation of Belize, for around $2 million. And as much of a brag of a purchase as it was, Bullock’s motivation was not simply an ostentatious show of extravagance, but a long-term plan – Bullock plans to turn the island into a holiday resort, and the work is well underway. Such is the intent to brand the island as a destination that it even has its own Instagram account.

Private Island, Private Enterprise

In Bullock’s own words, he first came across the property from watching a YouTube clip of it, while on the hunt for fun things to buy. During one All-Star break, he visited it for the first time, and was surprised to find the island is heart-shaped, something he felt had added meaning given that he has a son called Heart.

On that five-acre plot, Bullock is constructing a 4,000-square-foot house for his family, and is also also building pretty ambitiously beyond that. He intends to add eight villas for guests, a restaurant and bar, a spa, a basketball court and an infinity pool, deciding to open parts of the island to paying guests and transforming his private getaway into a small resort. The “private” island, therefore, will have members of the public. As long as they pay.

Construction has progressed substantially. Per the Instagram account, the main villa is now complete, and several of the guest villas are live. The resort concept includes a beach bar, wellness and fitness facilities and a restaurant, all framed by the island’s natural Caribbean beauty. There are also a giant set of letters bearing the name BULLOCK ISLAND, lest there were any doubt as to who owns it.

Bullock’s NBA Career

Bullock could afford the purchase as he made some good money in his career. He was selected with the 25th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, for whom he played his first two seasons, before travelling all around the league.

Over his career, Bullock  – a shooting specialist – played for the Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and most recently the Houston Rockets, with whom his career wound down in the 2023-24 season. Across more than 550 regular-season games, he averaged 7.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, shooting 38.5% from three-point range, and added a 9.2 points per game average in the postseason.

Along the way, Bullock earned lifetime earnings – per Spotrac – of $53.1 million. More than enough for both an island and its eight villas. And some lettering.
