The winner of The Open Championship in 2025 will win $3.1 million as part of a $17 million purse, according to the R&A. The purse is the same as the prize money for the 2024 British Open, won by Xander Schauffele.
The tournament, the final major of the 2025 season, is being played from July 16 to July 20 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The second place finisher will win $1.759 million and third place will take home $1.128 million.
Scottie Scheffler entered Sunday’s final round with a 4-shot lead and quickly pulled away from the field, opening up a 7-shot lead through six holes. Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, is seeking his first Claret Jug as the winner of The Open Championship. He won the PGA Championship for the first time earlier in 2025 and has won The Masters twice, in 2022 and 2024.
After hitting the lip of a bunker and double bogeying the 8th hole, Scheffler’s lead was cut to four. A birdie on the ninth moved the lead back to five, with 2025 Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup and Haotong Li in a tie for second. Harris English, Rory McIlroy and Matthew Fitzpatrick were tied for third through nine holes.
When asked about his success closing out tournaments in recent years, Scheffler told reporters after the third round, “Your guess is as good as mine. I like being out here competing. This is why we work so hard is to have opportunities like this, and I’m excited for the challenge of tomorrow. Winning major championships is not an easy task, and I’ve put myself in a good position. Going into tomorrow I’m going to step up there on the first tee and I’m going to be trying to get the ball in the fairway, and when I get to the second shot I’m going to be trying to get that ball on the green. There’s not really too much else going on.”
Scheffler was also asked about his pursuit of a career grand slam, a feat only six golfers (Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy) have accomplished. Scheffler told reporters, “Yeah, it would be nice, but I’m not going to be thinking about that tonight. I’m going to be going home, trying to get some rest and get some recovery and then get ready for tomorrow.”
If Scheffler completes the victory at The Open, he will need only the U.S. Open to join the list of career grand slam winners.
