Tigers-Diamondbacks Blockbuster Trade Idea Completes Detroits Infield

The Detroit Tigers are one of the most surprising teams in baseball this season. After being a Cinderella story that was able to advance to the ALDS in 2024, Detroit has fully taken off this season. They are one of the few Major League Baseball teams that have strong World Series aspirations.

Detroit is 52-32 and holds a share with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in baseball. However, no team is fully complete. As MLB’s trade deadline looms, look for the Tigers to not only be active but to make a big splash as well. The two things they could really use are a true slugger at third base and maybe another depth starter.

This Trade Idea Sends Eugenio Suárez to Detroit

The Arizona Diamondbacks are one of the most intriguing teams as the deadline approaches. It is unclear whether they will be sellers or not, but if they are, they have assets that essentially every club will want. Eugenio Suárez is one of those pieces. Suárez is in a contract year and proving that he is one of the elite power bats in today’s game.

In an ESPN article by insiders Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, they give Suárez a 50% chance to be traded, and one of the potential destinations is Detroit.

Here is what they had to say about his trade value:

“Suarez is in a contract year and, despite turning 34 years old before the trade deadline, is sitting near career highs in isolated power and wRC+ (which measures overall performance). His fielding metrics have declined in recent years, but he’s still an acceptable defender at third base. Even if the Diamondbacks don’t offload their free agents-to-be, Suarez could move because they have Jordan Lawlar raking in Triple-A and primed to take over at third,” Passan and McDaniel wrote.

Again, this deal hinges on what the Diamondbacks’ plans are, but Suárez is certainly a welcome addition to any lineup.

Detroit Is in Need of a Third Baseman

To add to the Detroit Tigers’ case in this trade scenario, they could certainly use a third baseman. Zach McKinstry has been a quality bat, but he is versatile and can play pretty much anywhere on the diamond.  Other options they’ve tried at third include Colt Keith and Matt Vierling.

As for Suárez, he may be having one of his best seasons at the plate. He’s leading the National League with 67 RBIs and has 25 home runs before the All-Star break. This would be his second bid to the midsummer classic if he were chosen.

Considering this could also be a potential rental trade, the Tigers may only have to give away a couple mid-tier prospects in return, and maybe a pitcher on their staff or the aforementioned Vierling. As MLB’s trade deadline ramps up towards the middle of July, the Tigers are certainly a team to keep a strong eye on as they likely want to solidify themselves as top contenders in the American League. They are built on a strong core of players like Tarik Skubal, Kerry Carpenter, and Riley Greene, but one more strong acquisition would put them over the top.
