Tigers’ Gleyber Torres Makes $22 Million Contract Decision

The Detroit Tigers‘ All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres is returning to Detroit, in what will be the first of many notable roster moves that take place in the Tigers organization.

On Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that Gleyber Torres is accepting the qualifying offer of $22.05 million. 2025 marked his third All-Star appearance. Torres turns 28 in December, and before the 2025 season, Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit.

Gleyber Torres Opts to Not Test Free Agency

Because Gleyber Torres accepted his qualifying offer, he is locked into being a Tiger next season, and he will not be testing free agency.

Torres bet on himself last season, and it paid off. Over 145 games this season, Gleyber Torres posted a .256 average, with 16 home runs and an OPS+  of 108. That’s now four straight seasons of Torres posting a better than league-average 100+  OPS+.

Gleyber taking the qualifying offer wasn’t a huge surprise, as his calculated market value according to Spotrac is $14 million. It makes sense for Torres to guarantee the $22 million now, and if he has another productive season, he will be sure to receive a lengthy extension from someone across MLB. Torres won’t be the only deal that Detroit’s front office will have to negotiate. Back-to-back AL Cy Young Tarik Skubal is set to be a free agent after the 2026 season.

Before Detroit, Gleyber Was a New York Yankee

Before signing that one-year deal with Detroit last season, Gleyber Torres had spent seven seasons with the New York Yankees.  In what was considered an up-and-down tenure with New York, Torres was successful in the Bronx as well. He was an All-Star back in 2018 and 2019, and then hit 64 home runs over the last three seasons in New York.

Gleyber Torres’ sports hernia surgery revealed the hidden injury that caused his second-half slump with the Tigers, affecting his power, defense, and free-agent value but leaving optimism for a full recovery before Spring Training.

His best season as a pro came in 2019 when he hit 38 home runs and posted an OPS+ of 128.

Comerica Park is a little bit of a tougher place to hit for right-handed hitters, but Torres was able to make it work in his first season with Detroit by ripping 38 total extra-base hits.

Gleyber Torres accepting the qualifying offer is expected to be one of several roster moves for Detroit this season. They fell just one game away from the ALCS in 2025, and with the right moves this offseason, they will be among the top contenders in the AL once again. Detroit’s “wishlist” includes a depth starting pitcher and another power bat to go along with Riley Greene.
