The Detroit Tigers have, perhaps, crawled out of the devastating 1-12 free fall that began back on July 9, stringing together two wins, a 10-4 showing against the Blue Jays on Sunday and a 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday. It’s not enough to be certain that the team, which was clearly playing like the best in baseball three weeks ago, is out of the woods. But it is a start.
It will take a while, obviously, to wash off the stench of the recent slide, which, as the Detroit Free Press pointed out, included such historic futility as being the only team in a 13-game stretch to be outscored by 50 or more runs (89-33), with fewer than 25 extra-base hits and more than 125 strikeouts.
But, two wins are now in the books and there’s hope that, for all that went wrong for the Tigers, things are looking up. With the trade deadline set for Thursday afternoon and the Diamondbacks in town, there’s hope that things could be looking way up.
Eugenio Suarez Trade Likely Coming
That’s because there’s no secret that the Diamondbacks are sellers going into this week, and they have one of the most interesting pieces on the deadline pile–third baseman Eugenio Suarez, the one-time Tigers prospect who has established himself as a quality slugger in 12 MLB seasons.
Suarez is a free agent after this year, though, and the Diamondbacks have made no attempt to give him an extension. He is error-prone, to say the least–his 12 errors rank fifth in baseball–and he comes in at 34 years old.
But he has hit 36 homers and leads baseball with 87 RBIs, posting an impressive .898 OPS this season. As a slugger, he has tremendous value. As an error-prone rental, though, he can probably be had relatively cheaply. And the Tigers want him.
Tigers Want to Trade by End of Diamondbacks Series
According to the Freep, “The Tigers are interested in trading for Arizona Diamondback third baseman Eugenio Suarez, and soon. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Tigers would like to have Suarez on the roster before the Diamondbacks leave town.”
The Diamondbacks leave town on Wednesday after an afternoon game in Detroit. A trade for Suarez in the next 48 hours would certainly be welcome news for the scuffling Detroiters.
Tigers third basemen have hit .220 this season, fourth-worst in baseball, and have produced only nine home runs in 2025. The team’s .643 OPS from its third basemen is sixth-worst in MLB.
Tigers Facing Competition at Deadline
The Tigers will have competition for Suarez, though it helps their case that the Yankees pivoted away from adding him to the roster by instead plucking Ryan McMahon from the Rockies.
But the Cubs have an interest in Suarez, as well as a need–they’ve gotten only four homers from their third basemen and are under more pressure to make a playoff run this season than the Tigers. The Mariners, too, are said to have interest in Suarez.
Wrote Nightengale: “The Seattle Mariners, even after acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks, are aggressively pursuing Naylor’s former teammate, All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez.
“The Yankees had extensive talks with the D-backs for Suárez but thought the price tag was too high when they pivoted and traded for Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, who is superior defensively.”
