Tigers Viewed As Major Frontrunner To Trade For $66 Million Slugger

The Detroit Tigers are expected to be active ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, and Arizona Diamondbacks’ infielder Eugenio Suarez continues to pop up in discussions.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan listed Detroit as a top landing spot for Suarez if the Diamondbacks pivot to selling.

The interest makes sense. Suarez is a proven power bat on a short-term deal. He’s owed $15 million this season with a club option for 2026.

Tigers Can Get It Done

It’s affordable, and more importantly, it aligns with Detroit’s approach. They want controllable, productive veterans who won’t block their young core but can add immediate value. Suarez fits that exactly.

“Suarez is in a contract year and, despite turning 34 years old before the trade deadline, is sitting near career highs in isolated power and wRC+ (which measures overall performance), McDaniel and Passan wrote Tuesday. “His fielding metrics have declined in recent years, but he’s still an acceptable defender at third base. Even if the Diamondbacks don’t offload their free agents-to-be, Suarez could move because they have Jordan Lawlar raking in Triple-A and primed to take over at third.”

Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene have carried much of the load for the Tigers this season, but help is needed. Suarez would slot into the middle of the order immediately and provide power from the right side.

Third base and designated hitter are both areas where the Tigers could upgrade. Suarez has played third most of his career but could rotate in at DH depending on how Detroit structures its roster. That flexibility matters. So does his track record. Suarez has topped 30 home runs in four different seasons and has consistently delivered in the spotlight.

From a trade perspective, this is also a rare opportunity. The Diamondbacks are facing rotation issues, bullpen regression, and a growing list of injuries. With Corbin Burnes out for the season and Zac Gallen struggling, Arizona may have little choice but to pivot at the deadline. Suarez, a pending free agent with high value and strong recent production, becomes one of their best trade chips.

Suarez’s Fielding Would Be Hugely Beneficial

The Tigers are in a good position to deal. Their farm system is solid, with several near-ready arms and secondary position players who could be packaged for a short-term upgrade. They won’t need to include a top-five prospect to land Suarez. A controllable reliever or a Double-A starter with mid-rotation upside could get it done — especially if Arizona is motivated to move quickly.

Other teams are reportedly in the mix, including the Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants.

But Detroit’s need, Suarez’s familiarity with the Tigers — where he began his MLB journey in 2014 — payroll flexibility, and organizational match give them the edge. They can afford Suarez, and there’s a spot for him.

Whether they close the deal remains to be seen. But if Suarez moves before the deadline, don’t be surprised if he ends up in Comerica Park. The Tigers are ready to buy.
