Titan’s Cam Ward Doesn’t Think This Will Last

The Tennessee Titans are 1-7, dropping to the bottom of just about every NFL power rankings listing and seemingly having a fire sale. In short, it’s a brilliant time to be a football fan in Nashville! Where can I get early-bird 2026 season tickets?

But, at least they got that first-overall pick, Cam Ward, at quarterback to look forward to. So far, the results have not been good, but let’s be honest, there is no quarterback in history that could be accurately judged when running this ship.

Ward, for what it’s worth, sees improvement in his game.

“Yeah, I think I improved every game from an operation standpoint, from a play call standpoint, to getting in and out of huddle, to knowing where guys are, to being an NFL quarterback,” said Ward. “I think every game has got better. Then for each other position, every game we’ve had together, we’ve got better chemistry, because practice is a lot different than a game. So I’ll continue to work those guys, they’ll continue to work with me and we’re going to continue to be better.”

Cam Ward doesn’t think the tough times are going to last

Ward has struggled this season for sure. But, he’s done so with a poor offensive line, a since-fired head coach, a wide receiver core no one heard out of outside of Calvin Ridley (Tyler Lockett has been released since doing nothing at all) and an overall poor team.

It’s been a rough year for Ward. He’s completed 57.7% of his passes for 1,615 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s also been sacked an NFL-leading 34 times. The good news there is that even with the extended 17-game season he’s not on pace to break David Carr’s record of 76 in 2002.

But, Ward apparently subscribes to the “tough times don’t last; tough people do” theory.

“Eventually, it’s going to end and when it does, you got to be ready and you just got to continue to try to get better every day. It ain’t going to happen overnight, but if you continue to work, it’ll happen,” Ward said.

Paul Kuharsky worries that Cam Ward’s athleticism could stunt his growth

Paul Kuharsky has been a long-time reporter covering the Tennessee Titans all the way back to their Oilers days. In other words, he’s not just some kid with a blog.

Kuharsky notes that Ward’s athleticism has gotten him out of some jams, but he’s still going to need to learn the basics and mechanics of quarterback at the NFL level.

“Cam Ward operates with a certain looseness, which helped him climb his way to the top of the 2025 draft and has helped him make some of his best NFL plays,” Kuharsky writes. “But it also means his best work is least reliant on the structured mechanics he needs as a foundation to push his game forward in the chaos that comes at a pro quarterback regularly.

“So while a certain comfort and confidence that he can get difficult things done without textbook footwork or an ideal arm angle in a given situation can help him make a great play, it can also pull his game down and contribute to overall problems on simpler plays where he strays from the basics.

“How he finds the right midground there may tell the story of his career, and how much progress he makes in the Titans’ remaining nine games of his rookie season is in many ways the story of the rest of the team’s 2024 season.”
