Titans No. 1 Overall Pick Makes Bold Declarations Ahead of Second NFL Start

While the Tennessee Titans dropped their preseason opener, 29-7, they head to Atlanta to get back on track. Things got heated in practice this week as it’ll be interesting to see how things pan out on the field.

After a solid Week 1 performance, the Titans No. 1 overall pick is slated to return to action. With another few series ahead of him, the Miami graduate sent shockwaves through the league by making a pair of bold claims.

Top 5 NFL Receiving Core Belongs to the Titans, According to Cam Ward

Even though a few practices haven’t gone their way, Cam Ward is not afraid to side with his receivers. Calling Tennessee’s core group top 5 in the NFL caught some eyes. If anything, it was a phenomenal move of leadership as Ward looks to stay hot in his second game.

“I think honestly we have a top-5 receiving corps in the NFL, including the young guys who are able to make plays,” Ward said.

Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor stand out as the “young guys” Ward is referring to. While the QB is young himself, Dike and Ayomanor both were drafted in the 4th round. Each receiver is 22-years-old as they made their NFL debuts last week.

Ayomanor saw two targets come his way but he was unable to haul in a reception. Dike also had two targets, catching one pass for six yards. He was one of 12 Titans with a receptions in Week 1. Only two players, Calvin Ridley and Jordan Mims, had more than one reception. Eight other players had targets their way but came up empty.

Ward added, “It’s all about us, or myself, putting the ball in their frame and letting them make a play, and it’s also those guys being aggressive to make plays for the team. I like speaking it to existence.”

Cam Ward Isn’t Settled With a Top 5 Receiving Core as He Believes the Titans Can Have a Top 10 Offense

After the release of Treylon Burks and the injury to Tyjae Spears, it’s hard to picture the Titans having a Top 10 offense. There’s plenty of time to let things play out on the field, but for a team that won just three games last year, it’s incredible to see Ward’s confidence.

“We all believe it, the whole receiver corps. It really just comes down to us being on our P’s and Q’s every week,” Ward said. “And I just think that the biggest thing about myself and the receiving corps is that we’ve gotta always have confidence with each other.

“I know they’re gonna get hemmed up on a route, they know I’m going to throw an interception,” he added. “But at the end of the day, no matter what bad play goes on, we’ve got to always have that confidence in each other that we’re going to make the next one.”

Three of Ward’s five completions in Week 1 went to Ridley. The two have been clicking in practice as their chemistry shined bright in Tampa. Ward has made it very clear that he’s confident in this team, along with his abilities. One of his three incompletions last week should’ve been intercepted, but he avoided disaster as he’ll look to do again in Atlanta.
