Legendary retired New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, generally considered the greatest ever to play the position, has certainly branched out since hanging up his jersey after the 2022 season.
In addition to his role as Fox Sports’ lead NFL in-game analyst â on a 10-year, $375 million contract â Brady has also taken on a seemingly endless string of other business and public relations ventures.
In perhaps his second-highest profile role since retiring from the NFL, Brady is now a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, with a five percent stake in the team. The Raiders play on Monday night against the Los Angeles Chargers at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas, and on Sunday Brady gave fans another reason to tune in to the ESPN Monday Night Football game, scheduled to air at 7 p.m. Pacific Time.
Brady Teases ‘Announcement’
Before the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs game that aired on Fox Sunday afternoon, with Brady in the broadcast booth, the future Hall of Famer teased what he said would be a special announcement of some kind. According to NFL Spotlight host Ari Meirov, Brady said “that he will be at the Chargers-Raiders game tomorrow night and plans to announce something very special that heâs been working on ‘for a very long time.’”
What exactly the announcement would be or even what it would pertain to remained a mystery at least until Monday night, as Brady offered no further information.
Brady Jokes About Return to NFL
Fan speculation immediately went to the possibility that Brady would come out of retirement and suit up as an NFL quarterback yet again, though by the time the 2026 NFL season starts Brady would be 49 years old.
The oldest player ever in the NFL was quarterback-turned-placekicker George Blanda, who retired from the then-Oakland Raiders after the 1975 season, just short of his 49th birthday.
Brady himself threw some fuel on the fire of comeback rumors earlier on Sunday, when on the Fox pregame show he threw a pass to his former Patriots and Buccaneers tight end who is now a Fox in-studio commentator, Rob Gronkowski. As he had done so many times before, Gronkowski caught the ball.
Brady then took to his X (formerly Twitter) account, suggesting, presumably in jest but maybe not, that the pair connect again for “one more year.”
Fans’ Imaginations Run Wild
“Tom Brady prepping for his comeback confirmed,” a fan wrote online.
“He’s gonna run out of the tunnel and start at QB,” wrote another.
“My guess for Tom Bradyâs announcement tomorrow,” a third fan speculated, “is that heâs either unretiring or heâs announcing that he plans to play flag football in the 2028 Olympics.”
Earlier this year, rumors circulated that Brady would make his football comeback when flag football makes its debut as an Olympic event at the 2028 games in Los Angeles.
“He wants a Gold medal. And what better way to remain the GOAT and return to the sport he loves, by helping his country win gold,” the Daily Mail newspaper quoted a “source” as saying.
But a report by the New England-area news site MassLive on Sunday was more rational, stating simply, “Itâs unclear what the seven-time Super Bowl champion has in the works.”
