The Las Vegas Raiders have had a disastrous first year under head coach Pete Carroll. At 2-12, questions about Carroll’s future are emerging, and there’s a possibility he could be one-and-done with the Silver and Black.
However, Carroll isn’t the only one who’s garnering criticism for how the team has performed. Minority owner Tom Brady is also on the receiving end of a sharp message from NBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio.
Moreover, Florio believes the Raiders should give Brady an ultimatum: Either help run the organization or move on and dedicate himself to being a FOX Sports NFL color commentator.
“You can’t be doing a thousand things and be fully focused on a football team that you are involved in trying to help,” Florio said on the December 17 edition of “Pro Football Talk Live.” “Here’s the bottom line. He can try all he wants to distance himself from it, but he owns a piece of that team. This is on him. This failure is on him. He can either cash out or go all in.
“Maybe they will luck into a turnaround, and then we will hear all the stuff Tom Brady did to help turn it around. But this is the first full year that he has been on board, and it is a disaster. They are the worst team in the NFL, and it is unfair to the other people who are held accountable to not hold Tom Brady accountable for what the Raiders have become.”
Chris Simms Weighs In on Tom Brady’s Role With the Raiders
Florio’s co-host on “Pro Football Talk Live,” NBC Sports NFL analyst Chris Simms, wasn’t ready to place much blame on Brady. Nonetheless, he does believe the former New England Patriots quarterback does need to have a greater presence in the organization.
“I don’t know enough about the inner work,” Simms added. “The fact that he’s doing all these other things tells me that they didn’t expect him to be a part of the day-to-day stuff. That’s where I’m not sure. I know he’s going to put some input and all of that, but I’m not sure how much was really expected. It’s a fine line to dance. You’re announcing a game. I didn’t see it, but what are you going to do, call the head coach and the GM and say, hey, I didn’t watch the game, but this has got to be different. It’s a hard job to dip your toe in and be successful…
“They got work to do. If he’s going to be involved, it is going to have to take him being there, seeing the meat and potatoes, day-to-day aspects of how things are going down. If he’s going to get involved in this quarterback search and a coaching search, that has to start right now and you got to start digging in and doing your homework and talking to people.”
Raiders Outlook for Final Three Games
Las Vegas have three games left in their season and are marching toward having the No. 1 overall pick if they lose out. If the Raiders finish the season 2-15, they can have a chance to select Fernando Mendoza or perhaps trade down and recoup more picks, considering there are so many holes on this team.
Nonetheless, perhaps the team falls in love with Mendoza and see him as their franchise quarterback. There are still three games left, but it will be in their best interest to finish the season with two wins.
