Tommy Fleetwood once again finds himself in the lead at the start of a PGA Tour final round. At East Lake Golf Club, pressure continues to rise as the top 30 players of the FedExCup Playoffs compete for the Tour Championship title.
After a close call at the FedExCup St. Jude Championship, Tommy Fleetwood is still searching for his maiden win on the PGA tour. Alongside the the difficulties Fleetwood faces on the course, he finds himself repeatedly reminded of his shortcomings, but has perfected the art of a graceful and meaningful response when the questions seem never-ending.
Mounting Pressure
At the conclusion of Saturday’s round, Fleetwood fought for T1 alongside Patrick Cantlay. As the English professional golfer sat down to discuss the pressure ahead, he remained grateful for the experience, stating,
“I love that I’m up there again, and it’s just another chance. It’s another opportunity. It’s another day where I get to go out and do what I love and enjoy it and be in contention and just go and hit the golf shots, and what is like the best pressure, if you like. We’re trying to win a golf tournament and do something very special. There’s definitely different pressures than that, whether it’s trying to keep your card or whatever it is. Very excited to go into tomorrow.”
Throughout the Tour Championship, the commentators have spoken a lot about ‘scar tissue’ and how it continues to build with each near miss by Fleetwood. While this may be true, it doesn’t show on the professional, as Fleetwood maintains a steady but positive attitude no matter what he faces.
With 8 international wins, a silver Olympic medal, and 30 top-ten finishes, it seems like the perfect time for Fleetwood to add PGA Tour winner to his already impressive list of accomplishments.
Being His Own Best Friend
At the conclusion of the first nine, Fleetwood held a steady at T1, 3 shots in the lead. The 34-year-old not only continues to show outward kindness to fans and players alike, but recently opened up about his own mantra, of being his own best friend. When asked about this sentiment, Fleetwood mentioned that his children inspired it, and how he utilizes what he would tell his kids while on the bag for them.
“I think it’s all about being very clear with what you’re doing, having a great attitude, having a great frame of mind, make sure I’m telling myself all the right things and just commit to those things. Like I just said, there’s only 30 players this week. It could be 100, 150, whatever it is tees Sunday and in contention. That’s what everybody wants. I am lucky enough that I get to be one of those guys, so I’m having the time of my life out there and I’m playing great and I’ve got to enjoy it while it’s happening. You never know. Tomorrow might be my time, it might not, but I’ll still have a great time doing”
With 9 holes left to play in Atlanta, Georgia, fans can watch as Tommy Fleetwood fights for a much earned and well-deserved win.
