Tony Romo Turns Heads With Patriots ‘DTF’ Comment on Broadcast

Polarizing NFL on CBS analyst Tony Romo doesn’t have much of a filter, as evidenced by the Nov. 11 telecast featuring the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Midway through the broadcast between the two Super Bowl hopefuls, Romo marveled at a play by the New England defense. It gave Romo a chance to praise the Patriots’ performance under new head coach Mike Vrabel while also revealing an interesting little tidbit about an apparent Vrabel moniker.

“Fundamentally sound,” Romo remarked during the CBS telecast. “This team is DTF, Jim. The Patriots — details, toughness, and they finish. That’s my moniker.”

“That’s very close to what Vrabel tells us, too,” play-by-play man Jim Nantz interjected.

“Oh, he says that, too?” Romo quipped.

“Except I think the T might be technique for him, but it’s all good,” Nantz replied.

Internet Reacts to Tomy Romo’s Patriots ‘DTF’ Comment

A quick Google search of “DTF” does offer a handful of different variations of the abbreviation and what it stands for, but there is one that stands out above the rest, at least in the minds of most. You know, the one that has its own Urban Dictionary definition.

That led to no shortage of reaction from the internet.

Slightly more on the nose was an early analysis from Romo about Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. With rain falling in southwest Florida, Maye was challenged in a way he hasn’t been much in his career up until this point.

Romo noticed it early and looked prescient when Maye sailed one right after the analyst chimed in.

Significance of Nantz-Romo Calling Patriots Game

The Week 10 showdown in Tampa was big for both teams on and off the field. Of course, it’s a measuring-stick opportunity for two teams trying to prove they’re for real. But don’t overlook the significance of CBS sending its No. 1 crew of Nantz and Romo.

That development is especially noteworthy for the Patriots, and might be as big of an indicator as any other that Vrbael has them going the right direction. There used to be a time when CBS’ top crew had the Patriots every other week, but that feels like ancient history at this point. Two straight four-win seasons will do that.

“Tony and I were joking how long it’s been,” Nantz told The Boston Globe this week. “I don’t know if us calling the game validates anything, but we were thrilled to find out we were doing this one when we got the schedule.”

The Patriots will get plenty of exposure over the second half of the season. That starts in Week 11 when they’ll play the New York Jets on “Thursday Night Football,” and two weeks after that, they’ll host the New York Giants on “Monday Night Football.” It’s also safe to assume the Week 15 game with Buffalo, potentially a de facto AFC East title game, will get Nantz and Romo, as will Week 16 against the Ravens if Baltimore is in playoff contention.

And the, of course, the NFL playoffs, which is becoming a likelier outcome by the week.
