Top Seeds Shine On Day 5 of ATP Wimbledon Action As Alcaraz & Fritz Advance

Catch up on all of the latest ATP Wimbledon action with Heavy’s day five recap & highlights.

Friday’s action from SW19 saw several top-seeded players impress. On Centre Court, No. 5 seed Taylor Fritz picked up a big win (6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1) over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, punching his ticket to the fourth round after winning titles in both Stuttgart and Eastbourne ahead of this year’s tournament.

In their most recent meeting prior to Friday, Davidovich Fokina picked up a big win at the Delray Beach Open in February, extending his head-to-head lead over Fritz to 3-1. With today’s win, Fritz now punches his ticket to the fourth round while moving one step closer to evening up the head-to-head.

Following Fritz’s big win on Centre Court, two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz picked up a four-set win over Jan-Lennard Struff (6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4), moving one step closer to winning a third-straight title.

With his win, Alcaraz now secures his place in the fourth round, where he’ll face off against No. 14 seed Andrey Rublev, who picked up a straight-set win (7-5, 6-2, 6-3) against Adrian Mannarino on Court 3 today.

The win comes on the heels of a disappointing 2024 Wimbledon campaign from Rublev, which saw him eliminated in the first round by Francisco Comesana.

No. 17 Seed Khachanov Advances in Thriller While Hometown Favorite Norrie Cruises Past Bellucci

In addition to the aforementioned top seeds shining on Friday, hometown favorite Cameron Norrie picked up a big straight-set win (7-6, 6-4, 6-3) over Italian standout Mattia Bellucci on Court 1.

With the win, Norrie now improves on last year’s performance at SW19, which saw him suffer a third-round elimination at the hands of Alexander Zverev. Norrie also notably now sets himself up for a big fourth-round meeting with Nicolás Jarry on Sunday.

Additionally, No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov picked up a thrilling win (7-6, 6-5, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6) over Nuno Borges on Court 2. In the first, Khachanov won a hard-fought tiebreak before conceding the second and third sets.

With his back against the wall, Khachanov was able to win the fourth set in convincing fashion, however, Borges played an impressive fifth set, forcing a deciding-set tiebreak that went 18 points.

Friday’s action also notably saw teenage standout João Fonseca‘s maiden Wimbledon run come to an end at the hands of Nicolás Jarry (6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6). After losing the first two sets, Fonseca appeared to find his rhythm in the third, however, Jarry emerged on the winning side of a hard-fought tiebreak in the fourth to win the match.
