T
his truly has been a quiet offseason for the Golden State Warriors. The only team to not make a move this offseason, the franchise will see almost all of their pieces from last season return– minus Kevon Looney— and have no new faces coming in. But the lack of changes stem beyond the players and extend to the coaching staff as well. Terry Stotts, the Warriors’ top assistant coach, turned down an opportunity to join Mike Brown’s staff on the New York Knicks on July 22.
Brown, who was hired to replace Tom Thibodeau on July 7, is still trying to fill his staff ahead of the 2025-26 season. Stotts was among the many names on the list to fill the lead assistant role, along with coaches such as Jay Triano and James Borrego, but after being approached, he decided instead to stay on Steve Kerr’s Warriors’ staff.
Stotts’ Coaching Career Thus Far
Prior to joining the Warriors’ staff in-time for the 2024-25 season, Stotts was the top assistant for the Milwaukee Bucks but a day before the 2023-24 preseason was set to begin, he resigned. But overall, Stotts’ coaching resume is very impressive, holding head coaching stints with the Atlanta Hawks, Bucks and Portland Trail Blazers— building the Trail Blazers into perennial playoff contenders. But after another playoff disappointment during 2020-21 season, Stotts and the Trail Blazers parted ways.
Since joining the Warriors’ staff, Stotts has brought a ton of knowledge and expertise and was pivotal in helping the Warriors earn a spot in the playoffs this past season. Known as an offensive guru around the NBA, Stotts played a huge role in the Warriors’ offensive resurgence late in the season.
Warriors’ Current Staff
In recent seasons, the Warriors have undergone coaching staff changes– with many assistants such as Brown and Kenny Atkinson landing head coaching jobs following successful assistant coaching stints with the Warriors. But this season, the Warriors staff is expected to remain exactly the same. Stotts and fellow assistant coach, Jerry Stackhouse, were both hired prior to last season and will remain in their current roles.
Also returning to the staff are longtime assistants Ron Adams, Bruce Fraser, and Chris DeMarco, who have been a part of the Warriors’ staff in some capacity since Steve Kerr’s first season back in 2014-15. The most notable addition to this season’s staff was promoting Nick Kerr, Steve’s son, from his former role as the Santa Cruz Warriors head coach to a bench assistant for the NBA squad.
